It really does seem to vary from teacher to teacher how much homework is given, but to give you an idea, the goverment guidelines on homework are below. Don't be afraid to mention this to the teacher if you are concerned! I didn't have any homework at primary school, and let me tell you it was a shock when I got to high school!

Years 1 and 2: 1 hour per week
Years 3 and 4: 1.5 hours per week
Years 5 and 6: 30 minutes per day
Years 7 and 8: 45 to 90 minutes per day
Year 9: 1 to 2 hours per day
Years 10 and 11: 1.5 to 2.5 hours per day

Can depend on the teacher and imagine your 7 yr old is in final classs of infant school? Next year I would think would be the start of more serious homework. Here in Scotland (unsure about elsewhere) there can be almost a year of difference in age of pupils in same class so here in a class where your 7 yr old is someone may have turned 7 1st March 06 and another child will still be 6 until 28th Feb 07 as 28 Feb is cut off date of the year for pupils commencing school in the Aug. Therefore some children in the class are more mature than others. Ask yourself if he/she is coping well. Also have a word with the teacher she may reassure you on this issue.

I have a 10 year old who gets homework every day and so does my 8 year old + a school reader. My 6 year old brings it home maybe once a week but has reading every day.

I think the 10 year old gets too much. It's okay to give them a bit to reinforce something they have learnt at school but to give it to them everyday just so they have to do an hour at home every day is too much. Young kids like this should be encouraged to do extra curricular stuff at this age to give them interests & a chance to run around & do some physical activity.

I never did homework until secondary school & I still managed to get a good degree.

Reading and studying weekly spelling words are pretty much all our kids that are in elementary school have as far as homework goes. Occassionally they will have a chapter test or something they didn't finish in class.

Does your child take have a planner that he/she writes down what they did daily in class and if he/she has any homework? Our school district provides these and we have to sign each evening so that the teacher is aware we parents know what is going on in the classroom. It works really well.

Good luck!
