It isn't normal for any cat to lose it's fur that way. Whatever breed or colour!
Because it's happening only once a year I'd like to know what season of the year is it? If it's winter it could be caused by something as simple as being over-heated! If it's summer it's more likely that you have a cat that is allergic to fleas!
You should visit the Vet next time and let him diagnose the cause!
Hair loss is caused by something. A certain breed may be more prone to a certain condition but a tabby isn't a breed, its a marking pattern. The markings are described by the predominant colour in your case grey (as is my own young cat)!

Cats shed fur due to various reasons:
1. Fleas: the pests cause a terrible de-furring in cats and dogs.
2. Malnutrition: When the cat is not fed with a balanced diet.
3. Stress: Like humans, animals when in stress, lose a lot of hair.
4. Skin Infection: The skin infections when not cured during beginning stages, lead to terrible hair loss.
5. Allergens: The cat may be allergic to certain things during that particular season, just like pollen allergies in humans.
Take the cat to a vet and have a proper complete diagnosis.

All cats shed and change hair. But not so much that you could say an area becomes bald. If your cat has such a problem, it could be funghi or allergy. Consult a vet to be sure. I have the same kind of cat, and although he sheds a lot, his fur is always complete.

It's not normal for any cat to go bald for part of the year-who told you that?
Sounds like a flea allergy(likely in spring and summer) or a fungal skin problem(more common in damp weather in autumn and winter)
Both these problems need treating by a vet.

The fact that your cat is loosing hair noticeably from the same area at a certain time of year makes me think she may have a slight allergy to fleas. If you haven't treated her I would suggest using Frontline (either the spray or the spot-on treatment); you may not even see the fleas themselves but if your cat is allergic/sensitive to their bites just one could be enough to set off a reaction.
My cat gets this in the spring/summer time when there are more fleas around, we have to make sure he is treated really regularly at this time of year t avoid the hair loss.

all kitty's moult no matter which kind sometimes weather conditions contribute to the extensiveness of the loss of fur if she is healthy and well groomed fed etc you shouldn't be worried however if she stops grooming and has no appetite you should see a vet about it lol x

Not to worry, all cats shed their coats twice a year. In the
winter they put on a thicker fur whilst in summer its lighter
just like humans do. Its to keep warm in winter and for summer
less fur in order to keep cool.

its because she has a flea allergy. i bet its in the spring or summer.
It can be just one fly that causes the problem, doesn't mean she is over run with them or anything.
best to take her to the vets and get the best treatment available, and that should get rid of every last one of the horrid little things (fleas that is)
