We all agree that there is no evidence for the existence of any gods (otherwise no-one would need 'faith'). Nevertheless, some people still believe that such a thing exists. If you're one of those people then how can you justify believing in something for which there is no evidence? If someone handed over thousands of pounds for a car that they didn't even know existed, you would rightly think them foolish, and yet this kind of behaviour in the sphere of religious belief is regarded as a positive virtue! Can anyone explain this to me?

There is none.

The use of belief for things without evidence is intellectually lazy at best, intellectually suicide at worse.

Belief is not worthwhile.

It is possible that in the hour and a half I've been at work, my car may have been stolen. Unless I were to go out to the parking area, I would have no way of knowing if my car is still there or not. I do not 'believe' that it is there, nor do I 'believe' it was stolen. I do make an assumption that it is there, but this assumption is based on past evidence -- for the past year, my car has been there when I got out there. If today's the day it's stolen, this evidence does me no good, but the evidence establishes sufficient cause to accept an assumption. That's not belief, because it has evidence. I do not suddenly run out in a panic that it might have been stolen because, simply put, at the moment, I have more important concerns. If it has been stolen, I'll find out eventually and I'll worry about it then.

(I mention the car thing because it seems to be a favorite of some people who hold that belief is valuable or even necessary).

What's the value of Love? What's the value of air? What's the value of classified ads? What value is an idea? There is no evidence for the reality behind these things, unless you look and have a mind.

If you believe in Love, you will find the evidence, for it exists. If you do not believe in air, you are still breathing it. If you do not believe a classified ad, you can always go to check it out. If you believe in an idea, maybe you can find a way to make it real.

All these things, and many more, require you to believe. There is great value in believing things without evidence, especially when the only way you will find the evidence is to believe.

Good question. My answer is God who created heaven and earth exist. How do I know? the bible tells me so. You may say that the bible is not real then I can say the history is not real. The bible is the account of the events in as much as any history about your ancestors and your origin is a history. You are an evident that God created man unless you can tell me where man come from. Why is it easy for us to believe that we have heart that pumps blood even if we have not seen it? Because we are told so and we believe. The bible tells us about God and we believe. Whoever does not believe will perish. That is also found in the Bible.

I can't explain it. But I am a Christian and for me the evidence is what God has done in my life. I traveled for 8 1/2 years in a Christian drama ministry living by faith. God has provided for me and that is my proof. Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.

same reason some people can say there isnt a god without evidence

people have faith in their own personal experiences... some might have experienced god... some might have not.. that is what shapes one's ideas... not evidence (at lest not in this topic.)

what you atheists dont like my answer (maybe people of faith)??? do you have proof there isnt a god?

you cant sit here and say why do people believe when there is no proof... when the opposing side doesnt have proof of its own...

bottom line... NO ONE knows... so we should all shut up and respect everyone's ideas.
