I'm 6' 4" 215 Ibs. I also want something thats comfortable to ride down the road. new or used

Your looking at at least a 21" frame. You may want a long cocpit, so something like the Specialized Rockhopper might suit. Trek are also quite comfortable and are good machines to learn on, very forgiving set up.

If you want general off road, then you will need a bit of fork travel, so look for about 100mm. If you are going to hit a lot of mud, disc brakes are a must, as they do not clog up. If you want to race, then 80mm front fork.

So:

General use: Giant XTC, Claude Buttle Cape Wrath, Mongoose, GT Avalanche 1.0 (Frames a bit heavy though).

Race: Giant XTC, Scott Scale, Cape Wrath Carbon (Bargain at about £900).

get thee to your local bike shop and get fitted, and have a look around...
depending on your price range, all manufacturers have different levels of bikes for every application...
check out Specialized, KHS, Giant, and Trek...
