Jeffrey is right...the first usable, saleable practical car was made by Gottleib Daimler in Germany in 1886. There were other "cars" before that but they hardly ran and hardly looked like cars. With Daimler's car, you could actually get in it and go a fair distance. He also sold them.

So that makes him "first" even though others had cars "on the road", more or less, before him. His was the first that really worked.
