What is the difference between scalloped and au gratin potatoes? I can't really taste a difference.

Scalloped potatoes are usually made with a creamy white sauce such as cream of mushroom soup. Most people layer these potates with onions and ham shavings before they top the layers with the sauce.

Au Gratin potatoes are made with a creamy cheese sauce and although some may add ham or onions they are most often served without.

Hope this helps!

Au Gratin normally has cheese in the recipe where Scalloped doesn't.
