I have suffered from headaches all my life and the only thing that every worked was aspirin. Trouble was by the time I turned 30 I had taken so much aspirin, that I burned a hole in my deudodenum and I almost died from blood loss! (lost 1/2 my blood before I made it to the hospital).
Since, then it's been a struggle to find something to deal with what I now realize have been migraines from age 10. I've tried imitrex, barbituates, codiene, zomig, tylenol, ibuprofen, inderal, - NOTHING. Then my doctor said try this RELPAX.
I couldn't believe it. It was a miracle - headache was GONE. I have to admit - the first few time I took it I felt kind of loopy - but now I don't feel that way.
Don't expect to get a big prescription either - 10 pill/month max.
The doctor also suggested I take topomax to minimize the frequency of the migraines - between the two - I have never been happier.
But DON'T take your advice from me take to your doctor about it - I'm just telling you my experience.

hello,
i have 2 sons and both suffer from migraines. my eldest is now 17 and my youngest is ten. they both started getting the migraines from a young age around 2 or 3. i gave boh of them nurofen, you can use the childrens one and it can be used along side the paracetomol. i was recommended to use the adult version of one tablet once my son reached 8 yearsold due to certain bodily changes after the age of 7. it is not hamful but may make vomit if she hasnt eaten. this will probably release the headache immediately as usually it is the stomach that causes the problem in the first place. i feel for your daughter as i myself suffered for years with 3 a week until i tried herbal medivine and i havent had one for 5 years now. there are also tablets made by new era, they may work for you.
good luck

This is a child, even though you had a history of migraines I would insist on an MRI as a peace of mind to make sure nothing else is going on. I had a family member with migraines and the MD treated with drugs, she wasn't getting better and had the MRI it turned out to be a brain aneurysm and needed immediate surgery.

I suffer migraines too. Unfortunately all you can take is the usual pain killers, such as paracetamol, cocodamol, asprin. Try placing a hot water bottle over head to ease the pain, avoid watching the television or using pc as it strains the eyes and increases the migraine.

First line treatment would be triptans (Imitrex, maxalt, frova, in US at least) for abortion of a migraine event.
Anti-depressents (tricyclic and ssri) are good for prevention, as are anti-siezure medications. Not sure what they use in the formulary for children in the UK, so I won't list any names.
It is always best to get medical advice from a physician raher than the internet. Avoid narcotics because of the risk of dependence and habitation.

go back to the doctor - demand to see a specialist she does not need to suffer and if she is prone to migraine then it will only get worse as she gets older best to start with a programme of treatment now.

Yes it doesn't look very cool to a 10yr old but anything is worth a try.

This is a herbal remedy which may help rather than giving her lots of pain killers.

I use Syndol - not sure if suitable for kids. You could ask at Boots. Try 4head as that is a topical thing. Also a cold wet flannel on her little head will ease it. Poor thing, she has my sympathy.

For treatment, use ibuprofen or mefenemic acid. For prevention, use pizotifen.
