mostly all of the herbal remedies were used during the civil war due to the fact that the pharmacutical companies would be just in the infant stages.

Laudum (not sure of the spelling) and Whiskey as an anesthetic.There really were not too many options during the Civil War. Even aspirin was not discovered until much later.
