I bought a cheap freeview. It picked up all channels except BBC1 and BBC2. So I bought another one and tried it it it picked up BBC1 and 2 but dropped e4.

How can I get the full range. I cant change my ariel but would upgrading the cable from the ariel to the box affect it?

that all depends on the age and type of cable,if it is cheap old cable then changing it may help,if you can change your cable from the aerial why can you not change the aerial ?.depending on manufactureres then freeview boxes do very as you have found.a signal booster may also help and relatively inexpensive and easy fitted.my suggestion would be to change the cable for a good quality low loss coax and include a booster.but if at all possible change the aerial as well to a high gain aerial for weak signal areas.

the cable is never usually the problem (i've had mine for nearly 20 years). however, i do suggest buying a booster for the aerial because the channels which you said were missing are actually quite hard not to receive.
