If you put tap water in a mason jar and closed the lid, would it eventually go bad or would it remain drinkable? How long of a "shelf life" would it have if it does eventually go bad?

Water has a shelf life of a few years. You see, it's not like there's anything in it that goes bad, but after a few years, enough bacteria accumulates in it to make it unsanitary. Like, have you ever noticed water bottles that have sell by dates of about 3 and half years in the future? I think that's why. Tap water might go bad sooner.

Bottled water pretty much has an indefinite shelf life. Of course, they have to put some type of date on there, but it is still drinkable agter that. Tap water might go stagnant sooner because it is less pure. It is okay to fill up jars for emergency purposes. But change the water now and then.

tap water in a jar with a closed lid can go bad faster as it has minerals in it and as it is covered it will keep warm so this is a good place for the becterias to breed,i guess it will be good for 2-3 weeks only.

yes it can go bad and rather quickly too, there are bacteria in the water and in the jar and in the air..so if you are thinking of just pouring water into a jar and sticking it on a shelf, it will not work- although there are water purification tablets that you can buy (usually at camping supply places) that can kill the bacteria in water and make it safe for drinking

i never drink tap water. i always drink bottled water and it is always refrigerated. drinking just plain warm water in a jar that has been sitting on a shelf for a long time doesn't sound tasty at all
