I worked for an airline for 2 1/2 years. Here's what you do: If weather delays you for an hour or less, hang tight. If it starts getting more than a few hours, ask for a food voucher. Most airlines will give those. Usually after more than 3-4 hours you're entitled to some other form of compensation, we (a different airline, one of their competitors) gave twenty five and fifty dollar off vouchers for your next flight. The longer the delays, the more you could get. I know you will be angry about the delay but the most important thing when speaking to an employee is to be calm. Everyone is angry. I always worked harder and give more to the person who is nice to me. If your flight is canceled, they should put you on the next available flight, for no charge. Make sure that they confirm you and you're not just listed standby. (for those who don't know the difference confirmed means they change you and that is now your flight, standby means you are waiting to see if you will have a seat or not) Also ask if there is an earlier full flight that you could be listed standby on (if you're going to be there anyway why not give it a try, you might get lucky and get on) Ask for food voucher again and any sort of other compensation you might be entitled to. I don't know delta's exact policies, but you could also call their 1800 number and discuss them with one of their agents.

Well, first off, check the status of your flight by calling Delta Air Lines prior to departure. You can reach their flight status line at 1-800-325-1999. Next, if your flight is delayed, get to the airport early. The earlier you check-in, the more priority you'll have with things such as standby for a possible later flight. If your flight is on time, but then is cancelled once you get to the airport, don't stand in a line waiting to re-book. Call Delta Air Lines Reservations department at 1-800-221-1212. This way, your ahead of the line and you might get on a flight that some unlucky person will not get on. Next, if your flight is delayed when you arrive at the airport, simply stay in the GATE AREA. Do NOT leave. They might make an important announcement that you might miss. Finally, check Delta Air Lines website for Weather Waivers. A Weather Waiver tells you flights that have been affected by bad weather and terms as to what you are permitted to do with your ticket. You might be able to change your ticket to a later date free of charge, even if your fare rules do not permit. So make sure you always look for Weather Waivers. Finally, Florida always is bound to have bad weather, so check the forecast and see what's coming. Get ahead of the line and call the airline a few days in advance to see if there might be a way to change your ticket.

Depends on where you live. If you live close then you can just drive there. If not, then take another flight.
