If you are asking for Injured Spouse relief, you should always file a paper return and attach the Form 8379 to the tax return. When done this way it usually takes about 8 weeks to process.

If you e-file and follow up with a paper Form 8379 it can take several months to roll everything back and get your refund to you. I know a couple of folks who waited nearly a year to get their money.

Normally when an Injured Spouse Claim is filed separately from the return it will take approximately 8 to 12 weeks from the date the IRS receives the Form 8379.

Make sure in the future to file the 8379 with your return to avoid this on future returns

When you are efiling it does take a long time because you are sending the Injured Spouse afterward. Next year do not efile your return, send them by mail and it takes less time, because they are imputing the return manually.

Have more taken out by fixing your W-4s & won't get a refund to lose. Getting a refund is a mistake and this is the consequence. Interest free loan. Whoops - obviously meant "have less taken out"
