see a doctor

My son is currently going through the same thing and he is 2 1/2. The doc sent us to have his hearing checked and it turns out he can hear just fine. However they said he is too young to have a test done to find out how is brain is processing the words he hears, so we don't know the answer to that yet.
I did find out from going to the doc that there was alot of fluid behind his ear drums and he ended up needing to have tubes put in so that the fluid would drain.
That was about 2 months ago and he's already starting to talk alittle more because without the fluid he is hearing more clearly.
Now the doc is going to have us go to a speech therapist to get him back on track. We're hoping we've solved the problem having the tubes put in.
Hope this helps a little bit at least.

He'll talk when he is ready. Does he communicate otherwise? I would ask the Dr if he seems to not be hearing correctly, doesn't interact like he should be, etc. Many boys take longer to speak than girls. My nephew didn't speak until he was 3 & I have heard that more than once & they are perfectly normal children. My older son started speaking before he was 1 (which was very early, even earlier than the girls in his daycare), but my baby boy is not saying as much at the same age. All kids are different.

My son was a late talker as well. I had people telling me it was no big deal and people telling me that he';s autistic (the child was clearly NOT autistic, but people fret). It ran the gammut. My husband and I weren't worried about it and just let it go until we felt that we should have him evaluated. The pediatrician is a good place to start as well as a head start or early intervention type of program. My son tested just fine, but everyone had different ways of having us help him to get the words out, which is what I was looking for. I knew there was nothing I could do to make it happen overnight, but being given tips by professionals set my mind at ease. The best things to do is trust your gut.

2 years old is still young. He may not be ready to speak yet. You should talk to him as much as possible about everything. Even if you are making a sandwhich. Explain what you are doing out loud.
Also, encourage him to speak by asking him questions. Then wait a few secounds to see if he trys to answer you. Then proceed to answer the question. Eventually he will answer you back. Just be patient with him.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter is still pretty hard to understand. She doesn't speak clearly by any means. She has her own language.

In your case, I'd be worried if the child didn't actually say ANYTHING. If the child is talking but hard to understand, give it some time and be sure to speak clearly to him and don't use baby talk when you speak to him. Baby talk just confuses them and prolongs the learning process.

Does he need to? My nephew had no real use for words because his older siblings and mom pretty much waited on him. His whining and stomping was working really well for him. Does he communicate at all? Hearing comes to mind, have him tested. Other than that, dont sweat it, lots of little boys pick up language skills at a slower pace. Follow your mom instincts....if it seems that something is wrong, pursue it, if it seems he is developing fine otherwise, ride it out. God Bless...

Do you mean he does not speak at all or that he doesnt say words yet? Most little boys are a little later in verbal developement than girls give him time he will be talking your ear off soon. However if he doesnt speak at all then to the doctor with him.

friend of mine started trying with singing. did work too. she hummed for a while... put in some words.... did that few times a day and hey presto! little one started humming and saying the words too... after that it became easier. but still it took her about a year to really get her son to talk out loud and clearly. Sometimes it just takes a little longer...

There could be a number of reasons why your son isn't talking yet. It is a concern that I would be up with his pediatrician.

Does he react when you call him or make noise?
Does he stare at people like a blank wall even if they're talking to him?
If he does, go see a doctor.
