Is it really legal to give a semi driver a ticket for driving in the left hand lane, I thought all men were created equal, why are they singled out for this, after all they have to pay a highway use tax of $550.00 for each truck on the highway to be able to drive on these roads so why are they not allowed to drive just as cars do what can be done about this and can I fight it?

I know In most east coast states, it is illegal for semi's to drive in the left lane. I think once you hit a certain part of Georgia, semi's are allowed back in the left lane. The thing is, the left lane is a passing lane only. It is not a lane for traffic just to hang out. I can't stand when you have people in the left lane driving slower than the people on the right. They should be ticketed as well. And there's nothing worse than being behind a semi doing the exact same thing. I do think that they are not allowed in that lane for safety reasons as well. If you have a blow out or something in the middle and right lanes, your chances of going over the median to the other side of the highway into oncoming traffic is also decreased.

In every state in the nation, the left-hand lane of a two-lane highway when both lanes are headed in the same direction is a PASSING LANE...that means you can't cruise in that lane. You use it only if you're passing a slower moving vehicle, and then you get your butt back into the right-hand lane.

On highways with multiple lanes (three or more) headed in the same direction, some states - such as New Jersey, Florida, and South Carolina - will designate the left-hand lane as a "NO TRUCKS" lane. That doesn't mean that 4-wheelers can cruise in that lane, it just means that 18-wheelers CANNOT use that lane FOR ANY REASON. If you get caught in one of those lanes for whatever reason, you're gonna get a ticket - and rightly so.

Whether you like to admit it or not, the truck that you drive - while a convenience for the load it carries - is a major inconvenience to traffic on the highways, especially in a roadway that doesn't have three or more lanes in one direction. Your vehicle is VERY slow to accelerate, will ALWAYS lose speed going up grades, creates a hell of a wind draft problem for the cars and motorcycles behind it, and completely blocks the view of the traffic behind it. It's especially frustrating when one gear jammer decides to pass another one who is doing three or four miles per hour slower, and the passing is attempted on a two-lane highway...that little maneuver will tie up traffic for miles!

I have also noticed in the past ten years or so that truckers seem to think that THEY own the road. I've seen truckers intentionally change lanes into the lane of a car that is trying to pass them, and in my part of South Carolina I see them riding two-abreast on a two-lane highway without even the slightest attempt to pass - they're doing it just because they can, and tie up traffic in the process. Contrary to what some truckers may think, WE who do not drive trucks have just as much right to the roadway as YOU do.

To answer you last question about fighting the ticket, I'd say you were out of luck. Just pay the fine, learn your lesson, and be done with it.

The "all men were created equal" schtick has ZERO to do with traffic regulations, by the way.

No traffic ticket for driving in left, I am also a truck driver, and a young one too. Here is the advice that i have, Go to Yahoo search type in: Semi truck tickets for left hand lane driving it will pull pages and pages of information for, you. Or can check with DMV. (Department of Motor Vehicles) of that state that you were fined in. To see what their rules are each state is different.
Thanks for the heads up. I have been driving for 3yrs almost 4. Some state highways have warning signs which gives you plenty of time to get in the lane that you need to be, Florida is one of those states just to let you know.

sounds crazy to me but maybe its a safety issue. I always believed that the left lane was for passing i.e. faster and flow of traffic was the right lane. If someone is just driving the left lane or lanes then congestion or bottlenecking can accure. Put a Semitruck in this situation and maybe there is a safety issue with forcing cars and other trucks to pass on the right, if they can.

The left hand land is restricted to passing. That's why it's called the "passing" lane. You get in the left, pass the car in front of you, and get back into the right lane.

I can only hope that there are more cops out there giving those types of ticket out. I don't care who they are.

Yes, it is illegal for a transport to drive in the FAST LANE. Sorry, but I don't want to be stuck behind you. I think it's the right thing to do. Your passing lane is the middle lane. There's no use fighting it, you won't win.

You're the ones always telling us to give a truck lots of room, stay out of our passing lane.

STOP HOLDING UP TRAFFIC just because you want to pass your buddy who is going 1 mph slower than you are. The left hand lane is for PASSING only. If you can't pass quickly, you deserve a ticket!
