Usually this is the fight or flight stance. There are other signals as to ear and tail position one would have to notice to tell if this is a playful stance or a warning stance.

I have only seen old dogs do that. They do it because the muscle tone in their necks is not so good as they get older. If they stand up for a long time & their head gets lower & lower until their nose is almost touching the ground. Is that what you mean?

animals are amazing creatures. their sense of smell, and i think intuition, are far more superior to most humans. when they assume this stance, they are aware of something they are on guard against. they are basically sizing up what ever threat they anticipate..
