Thje woodpeckers did special duty doing repairs on the boat as they came up. With all the high winds the ark was always in need of repairs and the woodpeckers ability to cut wood was extremely valuable.

When God called all the animals to come to where Noah was I am sure these animals would have acted better than the do in the wild and its possible there was cages for some.

i'm still wondering what they did with all the animal crap - the toxins alone in an enclosed area would probably have killed everything anyway.
ya know a lot of cultures have a similar story. my rabbi said it was basically just part of the trend at the time to write a least a few stories about blind obedience to god, to help keep children and stupid people in check.
