Yesterday I saw some people walking around with "ash" on their forehead. This guy saw the "smudge" and was trying to be nice by informing them and they said it was ash. What is Ash Wednesday and why the ash on the forehead? We tried asking them, but they almost acted like they could not explain it either.

Last year, on Palm Sunday, there were lots of palms left over. The church saved the palms and before Ash Wednesday this year, they burned the palms and use the ashes to mark our foreheads.
Why?
Because, once, ash on the forehead was a sign of disgrace, humiliation. We are reminded that God is greater than us, and we are not perfect, but God is.
What is Ash Wednesday?
It is the beginning of Lent, a time of fasting and prayer, that prepares us for Easter. It follows Shrove Tuesday, during which you "stuff" yourself in preperation for the fasting that begins the following day.

Yesterday...that's strange because ash Wednesday was this past Wednesday not yesterday. Anyways all it basically is, is when the palms from last years palm Sunday are burned and the priest will smear the ashes on our forehead in the form of a cross symbolizing us starting over...or rising from the ashes. It is kinda like a new beginning and we try to do something positive for lent as a devotion to Christ. It is also the first day of lent where we remember Jesus walking through the desert for 40 days/nights.

I am catholic and went to catholic schools all my life so i have had to go through a lot of ash Wednesdays so hopefully this helps and my time wasn't wasted too much there.

reminds me of the dot the Hindu females wear on their heads. I've seen that before and asked to, but to no avail, I've not received an answer either

Perhaps a mountain erupted nearby--spewing magma and hot ash into the air.
