The first one may be mystic. I'm not sure who first uttered it, however it is said about the Buddha that although he taught the way to enlightenment for 40 years after his own, not one word went out from his broad tongue. there is also a saying in Zen that everything is still, nothing moves.........There is more here....OK, this question has no equal, not many can ask it. Strange fellow this Lao Tzu, not your run of the mill book reader, believer, speaks about those who know not speaking. How does he know this? And yet he speaks. Ahhh yes his light shines bright. This question is like a weight pulling me down deep into the ocean, Sunman says there is a pearl at the bottom, lets see, I've went so deep I am going up. Lao Tzu likes very sharp knives to cut off the tongues of people. He is like a master surgeon to those who are ready. I can see him smiling now, cutting with that sharp knife, and what of the one who's tongue he has cut off, he is speechless, he sees the truth of things, and now he is smiling too. His light has been restored. The saying of Jesus when taken by it's self is dangerous, it is half a teaching, unless one knows what the bowl is. Lao Tzu teaching is full, he brings out the dark meaning. ~ : ) Simply put one must know the source of the light that is still before one can shine this great light to dispel ignorance. Stillness is correct, and the{who} is the light. ~ : )

Those who know do not speak;
Those who speak do not know.
Black the passages,
Shut the doors,
Let all sharpness be blunted,
All tangles untied,
All glare tempered.
All dust smoothed.
This is called the mysterious leveling.
He who has achieved it cannot either be drawn into friendship or repelled,
Cannot be benefited, cannot be harmed,
Cannot either be raised or humbled,
And for that very reason is highest of all creatures under heaven.

Waley 56

16 “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. 17 For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.

You forget the rest of each passage.

Jesus said; to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, and to them it is not given.

That I should heal them and they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears.

Unless you are healed; this is the first scripture of the people that Jesus fulfilled. When he open the book in the temple and read.

Read the Blessing in Matthews, Blessed are those that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

The true verse is;

Ye are the light of the world (For every man that come into the world is lighteth by the light) A city that is set on a hill can not be hid, neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel but on a candlestick that it may giveth it's light unto all that are in the house.

They are both correct, for Jesus said, you can not come unto me except the Father send you.

If you believe in Jesus you will keep his commandments and he will heal you, but if you give him lip service, he will deny you.
He denied Peter, because Peter denied him, 3 times.
Read the last chapter of the Gospel of John and understand. If you can understand then you will be healed.

Read Daniel if you understand the question asked by Jesus, then you are healed Matthew 24:15

The first quote is attributed to Lao Tzu. The full quote is, "Those who know, do not speak. Those who speak, do not know." It means that those who really know something tend to not have to talk about it. Those who do the most talking are the ones who know least, but are trying to convince people that they know something.

The second phrase is from Luke 8:16. This is part of the parable that describes the "word of God" like a seed. It warns that the Devil will try to hide the seed, but when it falls on "fertile ground" it will shine like a candle. In Luke 8:16, it compares his words to a candle flame, and implies that it wasn't made to be hidden under a bowl, but to "shine" and illuminate everybody. Basically, this is the same as any other religon. They all tell their converts to try to convert other people. This is how religions like Christianity propagate themselves. There are other parts of the Bible that also encourage their converts to spread their propaganda.

I don't know why you think the two sayings would have anything to do with each other.

When he said: "Those who 'know' do not speak" -- Lao Tzu was talking about enlightenment. Each person's personal path to enlightenment is unique.

There is a difference between those who KNOW and those who BELIEVE.

This is the difference between ENLIGHTENMENT and PERSONAL FAITH.

My path to enlightenment will not necessarily work for you. Our end objective is the same -- to reach the top of the mountain -- but I may have ascended the east side of the mountain while you are standing on the west side of the mountain. Telling you how I reached the top may just get you lost if you take it to be personal directions for how to get from hither to yon.

"No one lights a lamp and covers it with a bowl" -- has to do with demonstration through action and sharing PERSONAL FAITH (belief.)

No one lights a lamp and covers it with a bowl: when we are "enlightened" we should not try to hide it,we should not keep it to ourselves- but rather, let our light shine forth into the world as an example to others what they can have too. We teach best by example, not by words. Peace to you.

Your first one does not ring a bell, please tell us where it came from if you want a comment on it.
It does not appear to be from the Bible.

My word search does not find that quote.

The second one is from scripture, and is very logical.
