Ok he is a total stranger.... what do you understand the smile to mean.... ? And is a smile enough to make you look more closely at him.... what would your response be....
The reason I ask is I am terrible at reading signals.... and am quite shy.....But am working on not being so shy.... I am the one that normally gets asked out.... And I think I have got to be a bit more proactive... as havent found the right one yet....

A smile costs nothing but the response can be amazing. Try it and as long as the smile reaches your eyes and you mean it, the girls will know the difference. Like I said it costs nothing.

When a guy smiles at a girl she takes it that he finds her attractive or interesting and most girls do tend to look twice. But a smile won't get you too far. Girls really admire guys having the guts to come up to them and start a conversation. A girl might get 10 smiles in a day but maybe only one or two guys will actually start a conversation. If girls are asking you out you can't be doing too bad :)

depends on the smile, I think a smile can just be a friendly acknowledge with no deeper meaning, but if a guy smiles and holds eye contact with you for a long time, or repeatedly smiles and looks at you then that means he's interested. It's all in the eyes, not the smile!

It depends on the kind of smile. If it's very casual we usually assume he's being polite. If it's a smirk we get paranoid thinking that we've put our clothes on inside out or something! if it's a genuine eye to eye smile then more often than not we will think he's flirting.
The response: If we don't fancy you but want to be polite we will smile back but thats it.
If we do fancy you and you give us a genuine smile we will more than likely return it and maintain eye contact, (Some shy people won;t tho!) If you smirk at us you will probably recieve a dirty look!

You sound like a nice guy lol shame about them thinking ur a girl eh! Anyway i love smiles, i love getting them and smiling back, in general you know the diffrerence between a courteous smile as ur passing someone or a sexy smile that also gets a look back. It really depends on the situation, if ur in a club and you get the 2nd smile its easier to go and speak to her, if ur walking on the street unless you call her back to chat you'll never know, it all boils down to rejection and if we think were good looking enough to have the balls to speak to a pretty stranger that's smiled back. It happened to me before i was smiling talking to a mate and this bloke came up to me complimented my smile and we stood chatting for ages, it was really flattering as he was genuine, not up himself like some guys can be (turn off) and there generally the ones who'll have the balls to come and chat to you. Anyway smiles are good and contagious keep doing it maybe more people'll start too eh! :)

It depends on the smile. If I complete stranger smiled at me, most of the time i would be pleased - and smile back - I would probably wonder if i knew them!!
However, sometimes you can get creepy smiles from weirdo's - or it comes across as that!! Most of the time smiles are a good thing and its a shame we don't do it more often.
I think in general - you DO smile at somebody you're attracted to.

Okay, i'm like an expert at this! If you smile at a girl, she might notice you.... but a smile could mean lots of different things. It could be a friendly hello or a "hey, whatsup" or a "i'm just lookin". Some girls will go up to a guy and say hello if she really has the confidence to possibly get rejected. Maybe you should say hello. If a totally hot guy said hi to me, i would somehow make him stop and talk. (that's how i get my guys) but the thing is... i'm shy too. but if you wanna get out there you have to pull out of your comfort zone. kk?

lol!!!! chill out - people area ALWAYS gona misunderstand questions on here! ok as a girl if a guy gives me just a quick little smile then yes he'll capture my attention - but he needs to look away again and kinda gime a few glances to keep it. If however you smile psychotically across at a girl youll resemble a cheshire cat and freak her out - so really my advice to you would be do it in moderation - you dont even need to smile - let a girl catch you staring at her - if she maintains eye contact back - hold it for a few seconds and then look away - if however you look back in a few mins and shes still looking in your direction - you've scored!!

Depends how he smiles at you. Some guys has this way of smiling with their eyes their whole face smiles i would class that as a friendly smile. Then you get those who have a leery smile those i ignore and then you get those who smile all teeth but it does not reach their eyes those i ignore as well. But an all smiling face does it for me.:))

I'm guessing if he smiles at you then he wants to be your friend or likes you. Maybe you guys just had a moment and he smiles in between. Become his friend see what happens
