I would like to make donations but am not sure who to donate to. The listed ones are pretty well-funded so I wish to find a poor orphanage or old folks home who are genuinely in need of some kind of help to sustain them.

we feel the same, so we give half to one and half to the other. Half to head start and the other to Old Soldier and Sailors home

Unfortunately, both need donations. Both groups have been abandoned, orphans and old folks.
Split up your donation accordingly. Most government run orphanages and old folks homes will be very pleased to receive these donations.
If you do not know where to find them call "Social Services".

it depends on how the donations are being used...do you even know what these institutions use their money for? Most of the time both places such as these need better regulations on how the staff treats the children or seniors involved. think about donating the money to some sort of inspection team to be sure each staff member gets a background check and psych eval.

Why not give to animals in need? Those in shelters who have no families and no homes and have yet to experience what it is like to be loved.
