Please excuse this elementary question, but I am sure that there is software that I can use so that people accessing my hard drive via a network can not read certain files and folders?

I could protect my files in the old MS DOS days, but I am now brain dead on this issue so please help.

Thanks

A couple of options I know of:
- If you're talking about a Windows network, you can use folder/file permissions to restrict access. Of course that won't work if you're trying to restrict access to administrators, etc.
- The next simple thing to use is Winzip, and encrypt files as you compress them. Do make sure you use a long password (actually go for a passphrase), and use the highest encryption level, otherwise someone can hack it fairly easily.
- Last, but certainly not least, you can go for a free PGP tool (refer link below). These will do what you want, but again make sure your encryption standard is adequate (i.e. read some of the documentation, but this basically comes down to how long your encryption key size is). With this last idea, you may want to make a trade-off between security and speed though, as it may take a while to encrypt large files.

just hide the files.

right click the folder/file click properties and under Attributes: check the marked box next to hidden

then when u want to see it again
go to control panel make sure switch to classic view is selected
go to folder options then click view

under the files and folders section there should be a subfolder called hidden files and folder

to view: click the circle next to show hidden files and folders
to hide:click the circle next to do not show hidden files and folders

thousands of pieces of software.

Do a Google search on 'encryption software' and pick your favorite.
