You can get a reasonable decent car that runs and is roadworthy for $1,000 - the problem is I'm in England. There could be a problem getting it across the Atlantic. But where there is a will there is a way! You will have much more fun in a right hand drive car with a gear stick instead of that automatic wimpy drive. I think you'll also find driving on the left hand side of the road in the USA not only fun but extremely exciting.

You can go to an auction in your area or you can go to a used car dealership or try auto traders .com they have all different type of cars at whatever price

Save your money! Any car for less than $4,000 to 5,000 will just be a money pit. It is better to get the old one fixed.

Go to an auction. That's where used car dealers get their cars. Leave your newspaper and your computer at home.
