It could be an allergy...

The same thing happens to mine. It's quite normal and supposedly caused by the weather.

Although mine sometimes raise up and get itchy for no real reason. I think it must be worse in some people (like myself). We are probably mildly allergic to the ink so it's more of an issue with us. or at least that's my theory!
I just resist the urge to scratch and put something cooling on it, like a wet cloth, if it get's too annoying.

Why it happens I don't know, but this happens to me also I have seven tattoo's but it only happens to my lower back piece, it gets itchy and if i scratch it it gets raised and its usually the black ink that does it I try not to scratch it but sometimes I do it without even realizing it, Also mine are all fully healed it will be interesting to see what kind of answers this question brings in ......Good luck!!!!

This only happened to one of mine-the one on my wrist. It was just after I had had it done and the tattoo artist said it was likely to be an allergic reaction and my body was rejecting the ink so it was coming to the surface in bubbles. After the bubbles had gone the tattoo was really patchy. I had to get it redone (at a different place) and so far...no bubbles.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you. But mine do the same. I have had mine for almost 20 yrs so they are also well and truely healed. The symptoms also sound the same, itchy and raised. It is mainly on the out line and black ink that mine seems to raise. It will be interesting to see what answers your question brings. Goodluck.

Having 5 myself and well heeled. Over the years i have on occurance of the same. I was told it is the ink rising below the skin layers. it happens more in the summer due to persperation. I was told not to scratch and apply a small amout of no sting /bite bug ointment

If they're permanently bumpy, it could be scar tissue. Meaning, your artist did something wrong like press too hard with the needle. If that's the case, I wouldn't worry about the color fading, but the bumps are there to stay.

Some parts of your skin are allergic to the pricking , so during odd climates , there excess hormonal imbalance which causes inflammation to give an odd look

I don't know why but it happens to me once in a while too. I have a medium sized one on my left forearm and I've had it for more than 30 years. After a bit it goes away like nothing happened. Just one of those mysteries of life we always hear about I guess.

its just a reaction to the impurities of the ink, Like a splinter will push itself out of your body, the ink trys pushing itself out....(it wouldnt acutally come out) but it mimics how your body rejects certain things..... you can use some vitamin e oil, or baby oil just a little to help restore your skin cells, otherwise it usually lasts anywhere from a couple days to a few weeks. Be patient and dont pic at them.
