There are two subspecies of African elephant, the savannah type and the forest type. Points 1-3 mainly affect the savannah subspecies and 4-5 the forest subspecies.

1. Expansion of human populations across Africa caused loss of elephant habitat and populations retreated into small pockets of habitat which could only support smaller populations.

2. Hunting elephants for ivory throughout the 70s and 80s caused a major decline in numbers. Poaching still causes a significant threat in some areas today.

3. Elephants frequently come into contact with humans where they destroy crops. Locals will either try to chase the elephants away or even kill them.

4. A more recent threat to habitat is in the form of logging in forests in Central and West Africa and this is affecting the forest elephants in particular.

5. The opening up of forests has stimulated the illegal bushmeat trade and elephants are killed for meat.

The IUCN listed the African elephant as susceptible in 1986. In 1996, that status became replaced to Endangered. at the instant, the African elephant is listed as susceptible as quickly as back. that's no longer lots by means of an progression contained in the circumstances threatening the persevered life of the elephant, yet extra by means of extra effective information approximately modern and previous populations of the elephant throughout the time of Africa, and a transformation in how different varieties are evaluated.

While elephant numbers globally are low, they are only locally endagered - i.e. there is only a risk of them dying out in certain areas, not as a species. For example, elephant numbers are so large in the Kruger National Park that (last I heard) they were planning to start selectively culling elephants because they were destroying the Park (eating too much, pushing over trees and so on).

However, to answer your question:
> Loss of natural habitat
> Poaching for their ivory
> Climactic change leading to drought / localised flooding / etc
> Over population of competing species (there's only so much food and water to go round)

and, umm, I can't think of a fifth!

Ivory poachers are the main cause of the demise of the African elephant in certain parts of Africa.

Sorry, do not know the other four reasons you're looking for. But here's a try anyway: -

DROUT
SHOT BY HUNTERS

errrr...that's about it!

Reasons Why Elephants Are Endangered

As well as all the other reasons (loss of habitat, drought, poaching, overcrowding) they are very slow to reproduce, so if a population crashes its harder for them to recover.

There's not so many if them left, they are hunted for their tusks, their habitat is being destroyed, they are being driven off to create farmlands, infant mortality rate is higher now.
