Before you do any changes to your operating system, BACK UP YOUR DATA.

If you have not yet bought an upgrade package, try UBUNTU or XUBUNTU. They are free, reliable and up to date operating systems. Once you have one of these installed you have access to over 5,000 free programs.

you can put the windows xp cd in the drive restart the computer when the computer boots up from the cd pick the 3rd option witch is to leave everything as it is and then windows xp will install and over ride windows MILLENIU you do not need to format the hard drive

Put in your new OS disc (eg XP or whatever)

Reboot your PC and let it boot from CD

Format and Install.

Make sure you back up all your data first.
