A jet engine, even though simpler then a piston engine, requires hi precision, since it spins very very fast - about 30000 rpm.
However, search for an engine called "pulse jet". This one contains no moving parts and therefore easier and cheaper to build.
Pulse jet engines were used to propel the German V1 buzzing bombs that devastated London during WW2.

You can actually buy small jet engines. They are used for various applications. I wouldn't suggest trying to make a gas turbine. You'll just end up hurting yourself or getting frustrated and giving up. It's not something the average Joe is equipped to do. As for a pulse jet, that's doable, although they are incredibly loud. They didn't call the V1 the buzz bomb for no reason.
