First thing to do is get on the phone and call every animal shelter, vets and police station within about 20 miles of you and give them a description of your cat.Ask if it's been handed in and if not ask them to look out for it.If it's been microchipped this will be far quicker as they should scan all cats for a chip and call you if yours turns up.
If your in the UK also call the enviromental health department of your local council-they are the people who would be informed in the sad event of your cat being run over.
Then get a good photo of it and get loads of copies made either in a shop or on your own pc and printer and make posters.Put them up on lamposts,in shops and pubs and supermarkets-everywhere you can think of.On the poster put the cats name and what area it was last seen and also a contact number for you.Say there is a reward for it's return but don't say how much. This is because if you offer a large reward all the local idiot kids will turn up at your house with cats that look vaguely like yours looking for the reward.
You could also try paying to have a copy of the poster printed in your local paper/s.I have even heard of people paying their local radio station to read out a description of the cat,the fact that there's a reward and what number to call etc.
Another important thing is to go door to door all round where you live and ask if anyone has taken your cat in thinking it was a stray. Also ask people to check in garages, sheds and outbuildings in case it's accidently got locked in.
Check if any building work has been done nearby as cats have been known to go to sleep on building sites and get sealed in by new walls.
Every night when it's dark and quiet go out and call your cat.
If it isn't neutered/spayed it may have gone looking for a mate and will turn up on it's own.Un-neutered toms are especially famous for going away looking for mates and not coming back for weeks or even months.
Even altered cats do go walkabout. My female is spayed and a few years ago wandered off and was missing for nearly 2 months.I tried everything to find her with no luck and then 1 morning she just wandered in as if she'd never been away.I still have no idea where she'd been.
The most important thing is not to give up hope as cats can turn up safely a long time after they go missing.

Like one of the other answerers I had a cat that was gone for a week and came back on his own.
Posters and talking to neighbors is a really good idea. If you are school age you might mention it in class to your classmates and to some of the other grades. Also, a call to veterinarians and municipal animal shelters around there might turn something up.
If you live in a neighborhood your cat might have gotten trapped inside someones garage (or shed). You might try walking some of the streets (only if it is safe to do so) and calling your cat when you get to a garage. If your cat hears you he or she may cry out, and you can knock on the house door (only if you feel safe!!) and ask about the garage.
Cats are extremely resourceful. Ours have figured out how to turn on our bedroom faucet to get water (or to play, or wake us up) and to open doors (if they have latches instead of knobs). If your cat is trapped in a garage she/he will probably get out soon and come right home, so don't give up hope.
One other thing, if your cat is not spayed or neutered he/she might have run off for a holiday (so to speak). When that is over he/she may just come home, as well.

My cat went missing a few weeks back (well i thought she did, sorry but she was run over) After two days passed i put notices in my local papershop and in my local paper. I also put elaminated posters all over the estate that i live on. I also went out most nights shouting her name and shaking her biscuits. I also phoned up enviromental services incase she was found dead and all the local vets and animal sancutaries everyday . Most luck with finding your cat it is awful when it happens. Sorry to tell you about my cat she was found dead in someone's garden and the person buried her. I only found out 2 weeks after she went missing! If it's a girl cat she may be on heat or possibly if it's male it may have a few lady friends that he is entertaining. Has the cat done this before? It may be getting fed by someone else aswell as you. If you put posters up state on it for people to look in garages and sheds and offer a small reward. Also put posters up in your local vets and give all the animal sancturies the discription and a contact number for yourself. Hope the cat comes back to you soon. Good Luck. Please let us know how you get on.

Where I live in SE London, when a cat goes missing the owner usually posts a picture of their lost cat and maybe offering a small reward etc and pin this to lamp posts and trees. Wrap your lost cat alert/notice in clear plastic before pinning up.
If you have a photograph of your cat and you've got a scanner you simply scan the photo in to your pictures and work it from there.
Good luck. Cat's often go off mysteriously and then return equally mysteriously. No one knows why. It's just a cat thing!

I put posters on lamp posts and walls and did a letter drop to the houses in the neighbouring area. It just needs to be a couple of lines. I'm sure family and friends will help you post them. Try to find a good photo for the poster. Ring the local shelter to see if a cat has been brought in. Good luck, you must be demented!

Hi, We put handwritten letters through doors in our local area.I only put my mobile number on it not my address. I phoned cat rescue, and rspca to see if he had been handed in. And i phoned the council to see if any cats had been reported found at the side of the road. I do hope you find your kitty its an awful time, i had a cat that went missing for a week, has he been neutered? this will make him stray if you havent have him done as soon as he gets home. Good Luck hope you find him.

Hi there, my cat went missing a few years back, she was away for a whole week, i put posters up all over the place, in shops and in my windows and family and friends windows, and every day and night i went looking for her calling her and brigning her favourite food with me. unfortunately i think this was a waste because we didnt find her, it was a week later that i was lying in bed and heard a crying from accross the street, my little kitten had come home to me, i cried for hours, my baby was home, all wet and dirty but she was home.
Moral of this story: In my opinion if a cat goes away for a few days chances are she is in heat and will come back when she is ready, as for a male he is just looking for some fun and the same applys for him, they will return when they are ready, but dont give up looking just in case you do find her/him early i know i would do it the same all over again even though it didnt help me.
Good Luck

Hi when my cat went missing I put posters in the local shops.
I got in touch with the cats protection, rspca and other animal welfare and gave them photos of her too.
There is a couple of people who take in cats in my area and I went knocking on their doors asking if they had her taken in there.
I put her picture on the internet aswell cant remember the site though
She was found by the rspca and luckily the woman lived down the road and she regonised her straight away and brought her straight round.

Use old Indian mystic trick. Place a small bowl upside down behind your door. Cat should return in seven days. It even works for other missing animals as well as people.

Posters all over the neighbour hood and you just have to look high and low for the cat. Sometimes I think they just go on an adventure and then decide to come back like naughty teenagers...Hope cat comes back soon
