Alright, some people who are fair skinned ask themselves this question around the spring and summer. The main thing is that skin cancer awareness is in the back of our minds already, what we need to keep us away from the salons or sun is to already know the reason tan skin can be UGLY!
1. My next door neighbor is a year younger than me and she starts the tanning ritual this time of year every year... goes in and tans multiple times a week... she is 23 and looks like a hairless wrinkled, brown-skined cat... yuck.
2. Tan skin is drier than ours.
3. The tanned or fake tanned skin sheds and in some places of the body more than others and can lead to uneven patches of less tan or more tan skin.
4. Some skin of the body tans darker than others and you either come out looking half baked or you keep tanning (furthering the damage) until it is even.
5. Even sunbathing is is possible to get streaks.
6. If none of these reasons are good enough... look up the subject of fair skin in India. They believe fair skin is most beautiful... as do other countries.

Last but certianly not least... my sister in law tanned... she is 30 and she had malignant melanoma about 2 years ago... it was deep to the bone. Now she has scars from surgery. A tan can be more serious than whether or not you look good in others eyes.

It's never worth getting skin cancer for the sake of a tan. There are so many good products out there that give great fake tans these days

I don't think it is. I always used to want to go and sunbathe to try and get the tan that everyone else had got even though i knew i would only end up burnt because i have fair skin :S
Now i have realised that it's really not worth damaging your skin and risking getting skin cancer. Cancer doesn't need any help to form and attack you so why put your skin through it.
Also, subjecting your skin to the suns rays make wrinkles form earlier in life ...so think about that!

No, that's why I never go tanning, and I use a umbrella when there's too much sun. My tan loving friends always make fun of me because of that. And I look better with fair skin anyway.

No.
I don't believe so. I stay from from tanning (skin damage) as much as possible.

I'm also very succeptable to getting skin cancer, AND have tattoos... SO I always make sure that I minimize the risks of skin caner and fading tattoos by wearing a lot of sunblock and wear protective clothing in the sun when I am not. I am very pale and am (even though in college) still made fun of it... But I like my lack of tan lines and un-damaged skin. I like natural skin tones, whether you have white or a darker skin to start out with, I just don't like the look or feel to heavily tanned skin. I don't find it attractive, at all. Like I said, natural caramel or darker skin looks great, but fake either by the sun or tanning beds look icky, and damage it terribly.

It ages your skin faster and yeah, society deems it "attractive" but there's nothing that can make cooking my skin appeal to me, or like seeing other people that way.

I'm all about the 'to each their own' thing, but people are shocked to find themselves at 25 with 40 year old looking skin when I plead with them to calm it down... So I suppose they don't care or simply desire to be hot or attractive no matter what... (I'm just talking about a few un named friends, I don't know wveryone's story). So you can see a lot of people doing it, but you won't see me doing it.

It's sooo not worth it to me.

nope no way at all, It donst kill your skin it causes free radicals to cause premature ageing, leather type skin when older, skin sun spots, moles, growths and horrible dry dehydrated skin

its when your older you will notice it, its best to use something like fake bake or st tropez, they last for 7 days and look good

your skins the biggest organ of the body it protect the internal organs, it however needs to produce vitamin D and you can do this naturally with 15 Min's off day light exposure, if you want to sun bathe use a high factor, your mean to use products daily through out the winter anyways about factor 15 plus, to protect your skin form the harmfull environment

I think that everything in moderation is okay...you have to live a little. If you do decide to tan in the beds just be smart about it...don't use the level 1 beds...they are horrible! Use the higher end beds b/c they will keep you from burning, plus you only have to use them once a week to maintain your tan. It's more expensive but definately the right way to go if you want to have a sun-kissed glow.

this is a good question and the answers are just as interesting
fact1 the skin needs a certain amount of natural sunlight
fact2 you are more likley to get any sort of skin cancer if you are using products that stops your skin from breathing and processing such elements eg clogs the pores so skin and body cant process required elements properly
fact3 all things in excess are dangerous
common sense prevails

Ask folk that did that, that now have the misfortune of skin cancer. Common sense would say no.
fake tan is the way forward and it's healthier with no sun-ray risks.
