IMAGINATION. Higher octane is used to prevent detonation in higher compression engines or engines tuned with alot of ignition timing and a lean fuel mixture. Yours is not a high compression engine and the computer is tuned to run 87 octane. It feels faster because your wallet is lighter.
I use it in my 01 F150 because I have a performance programmer from Diablosport which has advanced my timing and leaned out the fuel mixture for more power. This requires a higher octane fuel.
Higher octane does not burn hotter as mentioned in another reply, it burns slower. Too much octane can actually make less power. When I raced my 5.0 Mustang every week, I tried running 112 unleaded racing fuel. It smelled good, but slowed the car down because I only have 9.0 to 1 compression and it burned too slow. If you have pinging issues on 87 octane, then you either have a faulty EGR system, a whole lot of carbon build-up in the combustion chambers or too lean of a fuel mixture caused by a vacuum leak or a dirty MAF.

I would use the octane reccommended in the owner's manual. 87. Anything else is wasting money, and your engine doesn't need it. The computer is set at the factory for this fuel. Now if you or someone else has reprogrammed the computer then you may need the extra octane. I had a 4.6L 98 F-150 4X4 truck and I ran a couple of tankfuls through it with the higher octane and didn't notice any difference.

Higher octane fuel burns slower, and is usually used for high compression engines. It won't hurt your car, but you are waisting $$$. Use what your owners manual calls for for best economy. It is what your car was designed for. If money is not a concern, go for the good stuff!

Revision: I did more research on octane to reveal that it does not result in a hotter burn as I had been told once, but indeed a slower burn (less susceptible to pre-ignition combustion).
The links I attached explain it quite well; sorry I wasn't more accurate the first time.

93 Octane!, i did not know there was, i can only buy 91 at our stations here in SoCal... but it's okay to use i guess, gonna cost you more, and you might get used to it and not want to go back to regular,
"Kind of like you get what you pay for", yeah your V8 will run a bit better and feel stronger.
