Why do most men automatically think that when you say you like someone it must be them?

Well since it's your best friend, most likely because of your close relationship. Also that guys are egoistic and they know that they are clueless about girls. They think that there are hints when there actually isn't one because they don't know how to pick out.

just say what you mean,if it is not him tell him straight out.You say you want a serious answer but you are asking a question on why men in general.....

A friend of mine who's female once used the statement 'i like sum1 but it's not you' with me. i must admit that us guys do get a funny feeling inside when a girl says she likes sum1...........i dont know why that is, but ive experienced it a few times!!
just tell him you need some advice from him and you trust his answer because he's a good friend. that way you've used the word 'friend' which indicates your feelings aren't for him
