I worked in Oxford for a couple of years - I found in the centre of Oxford around the city was quite expensive and crowded. If you drive, how about outside Oxford - Didcot is nice, just to the south of Oxford a bit, and relatively cheaper than the city. There are other places that are quite rural - I've heard that Marston is also nice but not sure about cost. Wheatley is lovely, but again might be a bit expensive to live there - it's sort of rural and only about 10-15 mins drive outside of Oxford. (The public transport around Oxford is also very good so there are buses everywhere if you don't have a car, you can still live on the outskirts of the city!)

Get yourself a copy of the Oxford Times (I think it is out on a Friday) and have a look through the news and the houses section for each area. It will give you a better idea.

There's nowhere inexpensive in Oxford! Marston is one of the cheaper - Blackbird Leys IS cheap but who'd want to live there! Try some of the villages/towns outside Oxford. Didcot is affordable and has a good rail link in, also Abingdon, Kidlington - good bus links in. Best of luck - my kids can't afford to buy around here.
