I could make out from the words ‘tight soles’ used by you as numbness in your feet. It appears that you might be having lesser feeling in your soles (bottom surface of your feet)
If it is so, then the reason might be lesser supply of oxygen to your soles. A doctor may be consulted and he would suggest you a proper medicine for regulating the blood flow right up to your extremities like soles, finger tips etc. self medication in this segment is NOT ADVISABLE. Your smoking practice that you have already left or the sleeping pills what you are currently taking has nothing to do with this problem.
However, you must take a very good care of your soles regularly. There is a lot of deposition of dead cells over the soles and it is essential to remove them regularly while taking bath. You can get sole scrapers made of pumice stones; stain less steel etc in the market. Get one and scrap out the dead cells out of your soles and after your bath, apply coconut oil, Vaseline, or any cold cream all over your soles. You will feel far better.
You left smoking a couple of years back… hence, you need not worry about any ill effect of nicotine intake after two years. Please remember you do not start it again.
Sleeplessness also called insomnia is usually attached with at your age. It happens more because all your thinking process starts as soon as you go to bed. One thought is always followed with another and it becomes a series of thoughts or cycles of thoughts that do not stop.
Visit internet at day time… you should not open the computer after the dinner… however, just move around for some time or watch TV and then go to your bed. Once you open the internet your thought process begins afresh and the sleep is disturbed.
It also happens if you sleep much in the day time. Day time nap of an hour after your lunch is essential, but not more than this, lest it would affect adversely on your sleep at night.
Sleeping pills are usually substituted with anti anxiety medicines like (in India) one tablet of Trika 0.5mg (Salt: Alprazolum) at bed time. However, you may consult your doctor for switching over to this medicine.
You can also try transcendental meditation popularly known as TM. By practicing TM you would be able to reduce stresses and anxieties.
I have experienced that adequate quantity of food should be taken as dinner for having better sleep. It should not be over eating nor should it be under eating. You cannot sleep with empty stomach.

At the age of 76, insomnia can be done away with only through the process of meditation through the process of self realization learnt under the guidance of an experienced spiritual teacher. For treatement of tight soles, try placing your feet in a tub of hot water mixed with a table spoon of salt (above the level of ankles) atleast three times in a day. Also do yogasans meant for strengthening the legs from a yoga insructor. Your should get alright in three months. In case you prefer to do meditation, then it can not only give relief in insomnia but also in relieving all other bodily disorders including tightness of the feet.

probably you are wearing a slip on type of shoe. especially two sizes too big will allow your foot to move around a little when you walk. the friction will cause burning. try a good quality lace up and wear nothing else but those and cotton socks for 2 weeks. have your feet properly measured a a quality shoe store like sas shoes. if they still burn after that it could be a neurological problem, diabetes, allergy or callus formation

Slowly reduce your intake. See a doctor. And yes, this is very likely to be due to nicotine and other chemicals found in cigs.

Insomnia is a problem that affects millions of people worldwide. While everyone is prone to have at least one bout of insomnia a year, some people are forced to live with this problem every night for several years. Insomnia involves the inability to fall asleep or the inability to fall back asleep after waking up during the night. Of course, because we all lead hectic lives, we cannot afford to live without sleep. Because of this, millions of people rely on sleeping pills.
Limit Your Use of Sleeping Pills:
Despite your level of insomnia, avoid taking sleeping pills every night. If you must consume pills during the week to function throughout the day, then avoid consuming pills on the weekend. If possible, allow yourself to fall asleep naturally on Friday and Saturday nights. Moreover, limit your pill intake to one pill a night. Gradually decrease your intake of pills. By doing so, you avoid developing a dependency.
Create a Sleeping Haven:
Another method for achieving a good night sleep without the use of sleeping pills is to create a good sleeping environment. The best sleep environments are noiseless, cool, and dark. If you live near a busy highway or street that produces loud sound throughout the night, consider wearing ear plugs at night. Moreover, if you are unable to sleep in complete silence and prefer background noise, ditch the clock radio for the soothing sounds of crickets, raindrops, or a water fall. Nighttime soothing music CD's are guaranteed to lure insomniacs to sleep.
Furthermore, maintain a comfortable room temperature. Bedrooms that are too hot and too cold do not offer a great sleeping environment. If possible, keep a small space heater or fan in your bedroom. This way, you can adjust the room temperature to best suit your sleeping comfort level. Lastly, keep your bedroom nice and dark. If you share a bedroom, your roommate may prefer a night light or keeping the bright hall light on during the night. Because the extra light may interfere with your ability to get a good night's rest, consider an eye or small facial mask while sleeping.
Aromatherapy:
Scents and bath oils are very effective with relaxing your body and mind. Before bed, enjoy a hot bath or shower using relaxing body oils. These oils are available in many fragrances such as floral scents, lavender, and so forth. Bath oils that are designed to promote rest and relaxation are marked on labels. Shortly before bedtime, you may consider lighting a scented relaxation candle in your bedroom. Soothing scents promote rest and a good night's sleep. Natural products such as hot teas and calming tablets are also great for promoting sleep. These products are all-natural, thus you avoid the risk of dependency.
