Since when can Americans do good accents!?! I've yet to meet one who can do an Aussie accent!

(Actually, Gwyneth Paltrow and Renee Zellweger aren't bad at being 'English'!)

I'm Australian and I think Brits and Aussies are generally pretty good. I really don't know. A lot of 'Hollywood' actors actually come from other countries and have to put on their American accent (Catherine Zeta-Jones is from Wales, Charlize Theron is from South Africa and numerous Brits).

The bit about not being able to see a Japanese guy doing a British accent - that would be because English wouldn't be their first language. If they were a Japanese person who had lived in England / USA / Australia for most of their life, then they would have an English / American / Aussie accent and may then be able to 'do an accent' like any other native English speaking person. If English isn't your first language, it's hard enough being able to speak it the way you're taught, let alone 'in an accent' of a certain type. It's funny, there are many Asian international students in Australia who have AMERICAN or BRITISH accents because they were taught English by people with those 'accents' (people from those countries). It's quite interesting, really! :)

In fact, Americans and Brits have a reputation world-wide - and with some justification - for being the world's worst linguists and particularly bad at mimicking other accents. To anyone with an ear for languages, most attempts at imitating other accents do not really sound very much like the real accents they are supposed to represent; if they did, attempts by native Emglish speakers to speak other languages (not just mimic the accent) would not meet with the hilarity they generally provoke.

Other nationalities, particularly people from Scandinavian countries and Holland, are good at reproducing both American and British accents, whilst others, for example, people from Southern Europe, are pretty good at US accents and South East English accents (though not so good at Standard British English).

I'm Chinese and I can do Irish, Spanish, Italian and Singaporean accents. :P

I pick them up from my pals back in college. Of course I'll never mock them or anything. When telling another friend about something my roommate had said, I'll use her Spanish accent to make the story more interesting. e.g. "Ai~ dos mios! tha stoou-pid calm-puta e's not work-in again!"

You couldn't see a Japanese guy doing a British accent is because it's considered very rude in Asian culture (at least not in public). When you get to know the person more, then he/she might be able to do your accent.

My Irish-American friend can't do Irish accents even though her mom's got really thick accent. Some people just can't, regretless of nationality.

My own experience has been that Brits are great at picking up grammar but feel that doing the accent correctly is somehow degrading (so they don't), while Yanks get the communication part right, and pick up accents, but always remain grammatical outsiders.

This is of course a hideous overgeneralisation, and I apologise.

I must disagree, Americans usually have awful accents, especially the ones in foreign affairs.

Haha i'm from the united kingdom...I take the piss out of yank accents each and all of the time! no longer as many persons are extremely as desperate as i'm to mick-take your accessory; in actuality i'm easily extremely jealous of it in spite of liking my very own one. I guess you men team up in little gangs, calling us Brits posh or something. no longer absolutely everyone seems to be posh - you do no longer understand. in simple terms like in the U. S., the place you men get opt for to the East Coast like the manhattan accessory - this is totally unposh and various times casual. Or the Tennessee accessory, or the Texan accessory. in simple terms like that, it occurs as you get further north in the united kingdom. i like making exciting of the yankee accessory. :D
