it is religious and has become somewhat cultural.

they wear those clothes as devotion to god. they do not get caught in material things and vanity, and can stay focused on their religion.

just as muslim women wear burkas after they get married, orthodox jewish woman wear long skirts and even wigs when they are in front of men other than their husbands. this is out of loyalty to their husbands. also, the orthodox women are still not equal to the men in most communities.

also, wearing all black is a big misconception. today, many modern orthodox women wear long denim skirts and fashionable tops. ive even seen orthodox girls wearing hot pink crocs!

the traditional outift for men consists of a black suit (or black pants) and a dress shirt. underneath all of this, they wear "tzitzit", which are the strings you see hanging from under their shirt. the strings are part of the jewish prayer shawl (other jewish sects only wear the shawls when in synagogues or when praying, however the orthodox are more traditional). the shawl reminds them of their god and religious duties.

they also have "peyas" which are those curls you see near their ears. (an old yiddish story is that the curls formed when young boys would sit in hebrew school all day and would be bored, so they would play with that hair and curls would form).

on the top of their head they wear a "kippah/yarmulka" which is a skull cap. it is supposed to cover their heads so that god is not looking at the top of their heads. again, many non orthodox jews only wear these in synagogue.

hope this helps!

Haredim, also called "Ultra-Orthodox" dress as their fathers did. The Jewish People have survived in part because they did not change their names, their language and their clothing habits.

It is both based on religion and culture. Separating themselves with distinctive clothing is just a part of it.

They're supposed to wear white. They add black as much as they percieve the world to be sinful.

...So nowadays they coverthemselves in black.

Atleast as far as i now it.
