Hi Star, I've tried everything with my daughter she catches them at nursery. The best thing is lots of conditioner and a nit comb, the BEST comb that gets EVERYTHING out if the 'Nit free' comb, about £10 in the UK, invented by a group of mums, they replace it free if it breaks.
It's the longest comb, each prong has a corkscrew groove to pick the smallest nits etc out of the finest hair. The only comb that does this 100%
Wash hair, then comb thorough thick conditioner with a regular comb. section the hair and work through with the nit free comb thoroughly, paying particular attention to the nape of the neck and behind the ears.
All the mousses and chemicas can be harsh on the scalp and don't guarantee the clearance of nits, and a lot of strains of lice have built up a resistance to them.
I've learned the hard way that this comb is best.
Good luck.
Oh yes repeat this a week later, incase you missed something. I do my daughter every fortnight regardless now, so that I know she's always clear. i do tie her hair up when she attends nursery also.
******Regarding bedding, I've asked chemists and doctors about this, the lice are pretty feeble they can only live up to an hour off the head without warmth and food. So it's unlikely you can pick them up this way. But to be sure, launder bedding and towels. You need only do this once ,simultaneously, when infestation is detected.
**** keep thinking of stuff! The comb is called the nittygritty! it's won awards here it is...

My wife is a teacher so has seen this problem a lot. If you dont want to use toxic/ insecticide based products then:
1) Get a nit comb.
2) Cover the hair all over with regular mayonnaise, not low fat, and put clingfilm on top to cover it for a couple of hours. Use lots of mayo-- nothing survives a lack of oxygen. But it wont kill the eggs.
3) Use conditioner in hair to make it harder for the nit eggs to attach to the hair..
4) Some parents use hair straighteners, the heat kills the nits-- nothing survives being incinerated. Not even the eggs. One brand is on offer at Argos at the moment.
Follow these tips and the nits stand no chance!

Yes you need to boil wash bedding every day. Try coating hair in tons of conditioner and combing with a nit comb. The nits find it really hard to cling to your hair then. Repeat this every day until they are gone.

I would concur with the people that suggest washing and conditioning with tea tree adn lavender based products.
Nits are now more and more resilient when it comes to chemical treatments.
N.B.....However what gave the best results was grooming with an electric nit comb.that kills nits on contact.
Also some children seem more likely to get nits than others, my son who had shortish hair got a lot of nits whilst my daughter at the same school, had nits once.
My belief is kids get nits rather like they get coughs and sniffles when run down and that building up the immune system as a whole by feeding a balanced whole food diet etc etc as well as tackling the nits head on is what does it. Also encouraging them in good grooming helps, nits like clean hair but they hate regularly brushed hair.

Nits are just insects, they breathe through their skin. They have a waxy waterproof coating to stop them drowning. But they're not indestructible!
If you use ordinary shampoo, lather up well, and leave it on for 5 mins they drown. It destroys the waxy coating and they can only hold their breath for so long.
You then rinse, condition the ends, comb through and finish with a nit comb.
The water and soap also damages the glue that holds the eggs on so they comb out.
Repeat every three days for 2 weeks to clear an infestation, then once a week after that.

wash your child's hair as normal then rinse and cover in conditioner and get a nit comb and comb the hair thoroughly, rinse and then put conditioner on again but don't rinse it off leave the hair to dry and do this for a week. once you are sure your child's head is clear wash hair as normal but put conditioner on the roots and don't rinse it off, this stops other children passing them back to them because the lice cant grip the hair root to lay eggs
