I have apperently got a "fatty cyst" on my heel (it hurts quite alot) its on the right hand side and its on the left foot. I went to my GP and they told me that I shud have it X-RAYED I did and it came back clear with nothing stuck to the bone, or anything like that. They made an oppointment for me to see the orthopaedic surgeon. If they feel that I need to have an operation then what are the risks ?? will I need crutches ?? I am only 12 so will I need a general anesthetic ?? will there be a scar ?? How long will it take ?? Please Please, Please, can you asnswer all of my questions Im very curious. Oh and PLEASE don't say "why dont you ask the orthopaedic all the questions" because I dont really like asking questions to doctors I really dont like doing that. Please answer them :) thankyou

I would think a podiatrist would be more appropriate than a ortho doc. You can't second guess the doctor but if you have the cyst removed it shouldn't be too bad at all. Most likely any procedure would be done with a local(like at the dentist) and a couple of stitches.Everyone will try their best not to cause you any pain.
Crutches? Who knows, it will heal very fast since it's all soft tissue with no bone involvement. Bear in mind there's a BIG IF weather you'll need this cyst removed or not. Check out WebMD.com also. Good luck!!!

A cyst, if non-cancerous (benign) does not necessarily have to be removed. The orthopedic Doctor will probably try non-evasive treatment first to see if the symptoms can be alleviated. He may give you anti-inflammatory drugs, and advise resting your foot and staying off of it for a certain amount of time. Possibly, the cyst may have to be drained. That would not require surgery. He or she will numb the area first then insert a needle to slowly draw the fluid out of the cyst. This may stop your pain. If surgery is indicated, you can have it done on an outpatient basis, meaning that you will go home the same day you have the operation. If you are very nervous about it, they can give you general anesthesia (knock you out), so that you will be unaware of what's happening. There won't be much of a scar. You may not have to be on crutches. If not, you'll be given an orthopedic boot. It's a special boot that extends from foot to calf and prevents weight from being distributed at the heel. When you walk with it, your foot will be rocking forward more. The boot would be easier for mobility than crutches. As far as pain goes afterward, there shouldn't be much. You may need a few days worth of anti-inflammatories and possibly a mild narcotic. Overall, this is an easy procedure with very little risk involved. You will be fine! Hope this helps.

I know you don't want to hear this, but these are questions best answered by the orthopedic surgeon. If you are uncomfortable asking them, have your mother/father/guardian make a list of your questions so they can ask the doctor instead of you having to ask.

Since I'm not your orthopedic surgeon (or any surgeon for that matter), I can't answer those specific questions. I can make an educated guess, but that would be just a guess.
