One of the best ways to learn a language is by going out with a phase book and asking for things.

Do not worry about pronouncation and do not be embarrassed you will find that because your trying people will help.

They appreciate the fact you are trying to learn, believe me I had hysterics going shopping in the local markets in Spain and trying to order things so did the Spanish but it always, great way to meet people as well.

An other trick is to speak aloud the words then on a post it note stick them all over the house.
I learn my Spanish and Italian by doing this as each morning your faced with a house full of yellow notes.
Suddenly they are meaning things and if you hear the word in everday conversation you are understanding.

Listening to a tape while I might be going to see a friend gives you the pronouncation, and to stop people thinking I had fallen off my skate I would have books to consult.

What about trying to find a Turkish speaker who wants to learn English you could learn from each other.

Learning can be fun go out and have a go like yuo have mentioned this is your home so knowing the language is important, I am now trying to learn mandarin chinese and this is really hard as who sentences change my the tones of your voice, this might make you smile I said a whole sentence and my the slight incantation on a sylumbil instead of saying there are two chairs in the house it became there are two cats doh!

Like I said have fun and you will learn.

Have you tried learning from a CD/cassette? When I've started to learn a new language (5 so far!) I've found this method really helpful - you can play the CD over and over when you are driving, preparing the dinner, sunbathing etc, and it really helps get the phrases into your head. You can repeat the phrases and will soon get to grips with the pronunciation. Then you mustn't be embarassed to try it out - people don't usually mind how bad you are, as long as you try. If you can practice with a sympathetic Turkish friend, that will help. Look out, too, for tv language programmes - try the BBC website. Good luck, and don't be shy - you soon get used to the sight of people wincing as you mangle their mother tongue!

The only way you are going to learn is by speaking it to someone and they can correct you, thus learning syntax, pronouncation, etc.. Choose a neighbor, friend, boss, coworker etc.. Than you can start with strangers. If you also focus on facial features you can catch on to the feelings of the words, and it is than easier to fill in the blanks in a conversation. Hey you were brave enough to move there you are brave enough to do this!!:) Good Luck!! Jane

If you don`t buckle down and try to learn! you will not enjoy your new life, try audio tapes, get a friend to sit down with you and go through key stages and sentences, it will take time, but without the basics! you will be back home sooner than you want to be. Good luck

Why not find someone looking for help with their English, and then meet for regular practice conversations with them? You'll both be in the same situation, so it won't feel as embarrassing, and you might make a new friend at the same time.
