One is abstinence, of course, but it is the least practical and likely to fail. Reducing the number of partners is also part of reducing risk, of course.
Another is safer sex using barrier methods every time a person has sexual contact. This is one of the most reasonable methods.
FInally, identifying those who are infected and effectively treating them and educating them are ways to control the spread as well. And now, some STD's can even be prevented by vaccination. So far that includes Hepatitis B which can be sexually transmitted easily, and HPV, with the new vaccine Gardasil preventing several types.

Hi,
STDs are diseases that you get by having sexual intercourse (vaginal, oral or anal) with someone who already has an STD.
The main causes for STD are
The Bacteria and viruses cause STDs. Those caused by bacteria include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and syphilis. These can be treated and cured with antibiotics.
STDs caused by viruses include HIV/AIDS, genital herpes, genital warts and cytomegalovirus. These STDs can be controlled but not cured.
The main sources of infection are shared needles and syringes, unsafe sex, and mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy.
Safer sex behaviour may reduce the risk. The affected person should be given adequate treatment with antibiotics.
Safer sexual practices need to be adopted to curb the spread of STDs.
The use of condoms during sex and limiting the number of sex partners may help in reducing the risk of developing the infection. It can be treated and cured with antibiotics.
Avoiding direct contact with an open lesion will lower the risk of infection. Safer sex behaviours including the use of condoms may further lower the risk of infection.
Topical treatments to eradicate the lesions include trichloroacetic acid and podophyllum. Sex abstinence or use of condoms should be practiced until both partners are free of the disease.
Having a mutually monogamous sexual relationship with an uninfected partner.
Correctly and consistently using a condom greatly reduces the chance of acquiring an STI.
Using clean needles if injecting intravenous drugs.
Having regular check ups for STIs even in the absence of symptoms.
Anyone diagnosed as having an STI should:
Be treated to reduce the risk of transmitting an STI, especially a pregnant woman to an infant.
Follow the full course of medicine.
Avoid sexual activity while being treated for an STI.
Ensure that the partner is also diagnosed and treated

#1) Abstinance. No contact = no transmission. works every time its tried.
#2) Condoms + hygene. Condoms act as a barrier, but if you don't back it up with cleaning you may as well have not used the thing.
#3) monogamy. If you don't have multiple partners and your partner doesn't then its almost as good as abstinence. Someone has to have the disease in order to transmit it and if you start with a pair who are both disease free... they can be as sexually active with each other as they want and have essentially no risk.

Best way. Don't have sex.
Latex condoms both male and female. (Lamb skin will not prevent the passing of an STD)
Be faithful to your partner! If you are both clean then there is nothing to worry about.
