To have the right shape for english means you don't want a flat tip, but you don't want a tip that is extremely rounded either. somewhere in between the two extremes is usually right for most players. If you use a flat tip it is quite difficult to control the shot or get the right amount of english. Flat tips also are much easier to miscue with when attempting a shot with english. A rounded tip that is very slightly flattened at the top is what I prefer for all my cues.

Trickshottim is correct. For the standard 13mm tip, a nickel curvature is ideal. For smaller than the standard 13mm, a dime will do. It all has to do with the curvature of the cue tip matching the curvature of the cue ball. The nickel curvature allows for the greatest amount of tip-to-ball contact. Another reason why tip curvature is so important has to do with where you are contacting the cue ball. If your tip isn't the correct curvature, you are likely not hitting the cue ball where you think you are. M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

Most players use a dime radius or nickel radius on their tip. This just means the curvature of the tip matches the curvature of a nickel or dime. If you're international, pick one of your local coins to compare against. After that, it's really just personal preference and what matches your stroke and aim the best and what feels better to you. Don't forget to chalk up!
