Seriously I have heard that the Irish are meant to be so nice and welcoming when you visit etc, I have known a few N Irish but not any R Irish except one who turned out to be a nut case but I wouldn't judge a country on one person, however since reading some of the answers on this section I have come to realise that you Irish really do hate us English. Why is that I mean history is history fair enough but for Christ sake I haven't killed anyone so why the abuse! I am sorry but it is very disheartening reading some of it and I would say that I would never go to Ireland now because of it as you don't sound as welcoming as people say I would be afraid of getting attacked if I spoke and people realised I was English I think it is a shame as I have always wanted to Visit Ireland and see where some of my ancestors came from!

I'm actually quiet shocked by most of the Irish people here. This is not a representative sample of the typical Irish citizen. Some Irish do have a problem with English people but its more to do with history, going back 800 years.

I totally sympathise with you Peachy. It's not your fault. As you rightly pointed out, certain periods in history had nothing to do with you or the overwhelming majority of of English people.
These people are pricks. Ignore them.

Tony M also speaks, as usual, alot of sense.

Please don't listen to some of the bigoted assholes on this site.

I'm ashamed of some of you here.

Take care Peachy,

It's human nature to pick up our father's fight and inherit our people's prejudice. Though some reasons for hate truly are baseless, some are vibrant and well supported... and so is the case the Irish against the English. The English stole land, rights, food, and dignity from the Irish, as well as put down dozens of rebellions meant to reverse the previously mentioned.

As an Irish "sympathizer" in America (I have little if any Irish blood, though I am Catholic), I have nothing against English folk, and like most Americans am part English myself. However, what England did as a nation was often deplorable. Even the "good" things they did had a dark side, such as the Industrial Revolution, where precedents of worker oppression were set. I could go on, but that would wander farther from the question than I already have.

So, if an Irishman doesn't particularly enjoy the company or existence of the English, I wouldn't blame him. But, it would be going off the deep end to say that most Irish have a seething grudge against the English.

Well I can definitely say I know no Irish person who would harm or verbally abuse a random person they never met before but hearing all the stories that your grandfather tells you about years ago and how the English treated us like **** and not just us the Indians,Australians,Americans e.t.c there is definitely an old hatred buried there but 700 years of oppression would do that but nowadays Irish and English get along greatly so much so that English and Irish always love watching rugby or football in a pub with one another and me being Irish have a best friend who's English and I don't hate English people it's just that the Irish never forget who wronged them in the past.

First of all,Irish people dont hate English people. We used to around 100 years ago as the English invaded Ireland and took over most of the land. The English forced us to learn English. That is why we speak english today. Today, english and Irish people get along pretty well. There is no more conflict between the 2 countries. Quenn elizabath and the president of Ireland even met each other some time ago😄

As an English citizen I will honestly say the Irish need to take a look at themselves. Not because I refuse to acknowlege that these events took place and were wrong and I sympathise with the Irish folk as Englishmen were no better off. But because most of the hatred some Irishmen (also some Welsh and Scottish) have on us all too often confuses many English people who were equally innocent with the few aristocrats who made these things happen.
These people need to realise we English are people too and like them suffered the same fates from time to time. These things include famines, punishment for refusing to accept religious reform and punishment for rebelion. But as the saying goes "history only remembers kings and victors". I'd be proud if any of my ancestors fought in a rebellion against the crown as has happened here on many occasions. But they aren't remembered as much as it should be.

I personally don't hate the English , I lived in Brighton and Jersey for a number of years and loved it. I think Irish people, probably the same as the Scots and Welsh, hate the English media. An example is the fella who won the medal in the winter Olympics a few years ago, he was British when he won, but because of some stupid reason he was disqualified, all of a sudden he was Scottish. The number of times this happens is too many to mention.
Also the English were in Dublin this week end, and talking to a good few of them in the pubs after, they said the whole controversy over the national anthems came to nothing. They were having a great time and so were the hundreds of Irish out in Dublin to celebrate the game, whatever the result may have been.

I'm Irish and I don't hate you, or any other English people. I take people as they come, so do all or most of the people I know, however, I still don't like to see an English team do well at sports or anything like that, not exactly sure why, I think it's just a part of Irish culture now. But I'd be a hypocrite if I said I hate English people, I support Arsenal, an English club, I enjoy English music like The Streets. I'm watching Corronation Street as I write this and I find English accents on women very very sexy.

Trust me, you have absolutely no reason to be afraid to visit Ireland, I know a few English people who live here and everyone treats them the exact same as they do anyone else.

Im Irish born and raised, hatred for the english is inherent, its built in, its just an indescribable hatred. I have changed over the years and finally realize that hate doesnt do any good. Its not up to me. The english that have wronged us will have to answer to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. hate is futile and we cannot hold the present day english accountable for past failures. Im as proud an Irishman that youll find and I hope I see my country reunited once more. Britain never had and never will have a right to our beautiful island.. Chiarrai Abu!

I don't hate English. I'm disgusted with England as a nation, resentful to its population and I DO hate the history that was bluntly ignored and was told to be forgived. I do hate the thousands of people whom have died in the English's hands either directly or indirectly. I live in N.Ireland and I constantly see the Union Jack every where I go. I am constantly being called scum for my Catholic religion, I'm constantly having British shite in my face, so I'm sorry 'peachy' if I sound a little rude if you come up to me and give you the grand tour.

The Irish hate the English, because the English hate everyone else. I find it quite striking that the English get shocked when they learn they are not really loved anywhere outside of England. What you sow is what you reap. And please, save your breath on telling me that not all English are xenophobes - xenophobia runs so deep in the English culture that the English act xenophobic without realising it.

I am an Irish, Donegalman and was raised to have respect for everyone. To say there are narrow minded people in Ireland and all over the world for that matter would be an understatement. However, I can only speak for my own. The Irish in general are a very jovial people, but I would venture that those of them who have never had much intermingling with people from England may still bear an ancient grudge. My advice, if you want to visit Ireland, Donegal,Dublin,Kerry,Cork and all the other tourist traps and you'll find that they're as nice as people say they are. I myself lived in London for sometime and I can empathize with how you feel, you are not alone, but don,t sit on the outside looking in. Come on over and judge for yourself firsthand. If you decide to come to Ireland, visit my website www.culandoonhouse.com and I'll take 10% of your first rental. You might think that's generous, not really, 'cause you"ll be back. Trust me.
