Do you have any proof that he borrowed it? (Witnesses, documentation?)
The police won't do anything, you have to sue him in small claims court. It costs about $25.

You don't call the cops -- it's not a "cop" issue -- that's why your friend is hoping you'll call them -- and whatever they decide is "final". It's a civil issue --- file a complaint against him in small claims court. The quantum of proof is only "preponderance of the evidence", in other words, if it's more likely than not that it occurred, you'll win. Where did you get the money you loaned him? Did you make a bank/ATM withdrawal or write a check to him? Those receipts could be used as your evidence. Also, anyone else who knew of the loan could be a witness. I wouldn't hesitate to take him to small claims even if you have no evidence or witnesses because usually that type of person ends up "tripping" himself in court and judges can generally tell who is telling the truth. You know, another thing that sometimes works is contacting parents (depending on his home situation, of course). Good luck! I wouldn't chase him anymore because you need to know where he is in order to file a case against him (and, of course, I wouldn't tell him you're filing a case --- just do it)

For the future, remember this piece of advice... Never loan more than you can afford to give. Meaning, generally, if you loan someone money, there's a very good chance you will never get it paid back again.

Write a demand letter and send it to your friend to pay you 300 dollars. If your friend do not pay you, file a collection case in the small claims court so that the court will order your friend to pay you.

eww. yeah, sounds like if you call the cops, they wont help you because there really is no evidence that you gave him $300. sorry to say but you're not gonna get it back. best thing to do is learn from your mistake i guess.

Unless you have it in writing with a signed agreement, there is nothing you can do.
