In the past, the uneducated masses need the learned priest's and mandarin's professional jobs.
Today the devoted believers can learn and serve like them or even better than them in the new administrative and spiritual instituions; perhaps the leaders should reconsider this matter. The matter of leadership in various aspects of our present day society are also necessary to be reconsidered in this age of human maturity.

Which leaders are you talking about and how much are you claiming they make? I don't deny that some may be paid a lot more than seems necessary, but just because someone is paid a lot does not mean they don't use what they make to help a lot of people nor does it mean they are necessarily living a life of luxury. Can you cite more specific examples rather than just refer generically to religious leaders--as if all of them were paid the same?

Answer to your question: This answer is not intended to offend you, but your question and comments alert those who are religious leaders, you are a novice and see only a tiny tip of the iceberg. I know many leaders in this calling who work, pray, study, do good works day and night of whom the world is not worthy. Never presume you know a situation accurately by observing only the outward appearance of something. This is also why the Bible says, "Judge not that you be not judged". Go deeper, my friend and get a little more involved so you can see rightly.

You forgot that they own their own bank as well. Leaders in any business always get the lion's share of the take, and it appears organized religion is as much big business as any other corporate conglomerate. The only difference is it is tax exempt in most countries.

Not all religions pay their clergy. Mormon's congregations are completely volunteer positions, big or small, including the Bishops.

$$$$ is a big part of religion. It gives them personal wealth and political power. There is big money in the fear business.
To quote Frank Zappa "tax the f*** out of churches"
