When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

My take on it, and since its Isaiah, one of the most difficult set of scriptures to understand I have to say it is just my opinion, I would think it means that if God is with you then no matter what kind of trials you go thru you can get thru them.

I agree with the first answer. The water and the rivers may mean difficulties in life no matter how deep and scary. No matter what problems in life you have God will be with you. Fire may also mean problems but bigger ones and scarier ones and maybe dangerous and treacherous ones. They could also be temptations which may sometimes be the most difficult problems in life. Maybe you shall not be burned means you shall not be harmed. Maybe God shall preserve your soul from eternal fires of hell. Maybe it could mean that the temptations shall not hurt your soul as long as you do not give in to them. Maybe it means if you trust in God with all your heart and soul, God will protect you from all your enemies. He will be with you in times of trouble. When you are persecuted, He will not allow you to be overcome by your persecutors. If you have problems, He will solve them. If you need something He will provide for your every need.
