Hello.

I recently (one week ago) bought a brand new LCD tv from Argos. After bringing it home and getting it set up, it seems the remote and tv wont talk with each other. I have called up Samsung (tv make) and there techical guys advised taking the batteries from the remote and holding the on button! And putting in new batteries! Did both this and the tv still cant be worked with the remote! My problem is I have lost the receipt, but I bought the tv using my credit card. Can I use my credit card statement as proof of purchase? (there was another item on the receipt!)
I dont want to be stuck with a dud telly!

Advise please! Thanks.

Hi many thanks to all who have responded so far. Just to clear things up, the remote that wont work is the remote with the telly, not a sky digital remote. Thanks.

Argos are a very good store on the returns policy. Unless stated they will allow a return for ANY reason.

However, Tell them that the Item is FAULTY and you are returning it under your CONSUMER RIGHTS as they have supplied you with a FAULTY ITEM.

You will find that you will get YOUR MONEY BACK.

A credit card receipt will be good enough! If they choose to ignore this - get in touch with your credit card company and get them to act on your behalf -

The other thing to consider is the fact that your credit card bill will show the day and time - Argos can recall the original receipt from their computer system - they don't like doing it because it takes time to do.

Another thing to consider is that a receipt is not a proof of purchase - for example - if you bought this TV and then upon leaving store gave the receipt to another customer who had bought the same TV and it had broken down - he now has a receipt that doesn't belong to him - therefore it is not a proof of purchase - there is much confusion about the role of receipts - stores ask you to keep them as proof of purchase but you don't actually need it in English law - it helps, but is not a legal requirement - to clear it upi and if you are in any doubt - go to your local library and look at Your Rights and YOU - by Hodder & Stoughton - it tells you in great detail in this book! A proof of purchase can be your word!

It also falls under the Sale Of Goods Act - as non merchantable quality - not fit for the purpose it was designed.

On the whole though - Argos are pretty good and as before - your credit card bill will suffice

Because you purchased your LCD TV set with a credit card you should be able to use that statement as proof of purchase. Argos will have a record anyway, even if you have lost your original receipt. Your credit card will cover you and you may still have time to stop payment if you contact them now. All you need do then is return the set to the store where you purchased it. Hope this works - it usually does.

You will NOT be stuck with a dud telly. You have rights and one of these rights is to return goods to the supplier if they do not work. You will be refunded your money it can easily be done in the store. Don't let anyone push you around.

Yes you can use your credit card as proof of payment. They should have a record of your purchase on their computers anyway. Call the store and solve the problem.

I have had dud TVs from Argos myself and I decided to pay 3 year or 4 year insurance from them. I didn't get a slip of proof and was worried so called the store and they said they have it on record. Got three TVs replaced in a gap of 4 years from Argos... says a lot huh?

I am hoping this one breaks down 'cos its still within 5 year insurance (1 year left) as I'd like one of those flat screens which are now at the same price as the one I have right now. haha Knowing my luck that won't happen. :-)

This reminds me of a funny and TRUE story which I got off a friend whose friend actually did it.

The guy's sister-in-law gives him her old TV along with the manual. It was a big screen TV and he thought 'cool'!

He got home and spotted that on the manual it was due to expire in a week's time. He sat down thinking how cool it'd be to get a brand NEW one rather than this 2nd hand TV screen.

What the idiot did was he called up the engineer to say his TV wasn't working. After that he tried to break the TV but it took a lot of effort and eventually broke the front screen. Engineer came and was impressed especially when he was told that it had falled onto the coffee table.
(It was actually by a hammer!!)

TV front screens don't break that easily anyway.... engineer said he couldn't fix it. The guy said that he had a week left guarantee, the engineer looked at the manual and agreed.

The engineer also pointed it out that it was for the dvd player not the TV. hahaha

The guy's sister-in-law had given him the wrong guarantee! The TV guarantee expired long time ago before he got it. So he ended up with his small old TV in the end. haha

You have all the consumer rights on your side. Argos, with a proof of purchase, must give you a refund. If you do not get satisfaction from Argos then your credit card company is responsible for the cost which they will not want any more than you. They might assist you to get a refund. However, I have never ever had any problem of refunds with Argos with a proof of purchase.

Firstly you have a 30 day return policy and as far as losing the receipt take in the card vouvher and they can look up on their records as you will have the date and time of purchase. This is time consuming but it can be done.
I had same problem at Debenhams and that is what they did.

Yes your card details will be suffice. Are you with Sky?? if so you have to programme the remote to run the TV, find the codes in your Sky handbook or on their website.
If not with Sky then Argos is obliged to fix the problem.

yes. a credit card statement can be used to prove you spend x amount in store that day. this is enough for most shops and they will replace the faulty telly.

Call the store and ask them they will be able to advise you i would think that a credit card slip (if you have that) would be enough i don't know what else to advise.

Hi!

Yeah, I've done that before at Argos.

However, it was years ago and I had to wait for my statement to come through, so it took a while.

However, if you can access your statement on line - even better!

Best of luck!!
