It depends upon the application of the shaft.Whether it is to be used for impact loading,tortional/shear type loading and power transmission. It can be a hollow shaft or solid shaft.
Also most of the shafts requires heat treatment like case hardeneding, tempering, solution annealing etc.

Most common material for shafting are :
EN 8,
EN 24(for heavy loads-like support roller of a rotary kiln)
SS 304
SS304L
SS316
SS316L
SS321
SS MOC is generally used in chemical plant for most of the pumps.
For blowers also ss321/420 is most suitable.
for conveyors -solid shaft may be of en8/en24 and pipe shaft may be of sch80/xxs/160 may be used.

RE:
materials used for manufacturing shafts?

shafts are made up of
1. medium carbon steels like EN8, EN24
2. stainless steels: SS410, SS316, SS304 etc.
depending on the requirement of its load carrying capacity (both bending and torsional loads), resistance to wear, corrosion and erosion.
3. Some EN8 shafts are also chrome plated to give a smooth surface having resistance to corrosion.

Actually, that would depend on what kind of pump we're talking about. Many of the less expensive submersible pumps are made with plastic or composite housings, and generally have stainless or sometimes even plastic impellers. The selection of a submersible pump will depend mainly on the service, ie. what material you plan to pump, what environmental conditions it will be exposed to, the desired performance (100 gpm vs 1 gpm), and the cost.
