Death has been wrongly interpreted during the infancy of humanity as non existence. There are many things in our modern world that we can not see or touch but in which we believe. Gravity, waves, etc.. are classical examples
All of us had to die before being born into this physical world. So we all, without exception, come from another world totally different from the physical world in which we live now.
This is an irrefutable truth independent of our personal beliefs.
We had to die to the "womb world" in order to be born into the physical world.
Death is a relative word that means change. We go from one dimension of existence into a higher form of existence. Or in a symbolic language from one world to a higher world. At each transition we have to change, or die, in the ordinary language.
People who cease to have a physical existence continue to live but in a higher dimension, unknown to us for a very good reason.
That good reason can be the subject of a whole new question.
This may sound too complex or esoteric but it is simple and an example will clarify it.
When we were in the womb of our mother we were in another world. We were living in a physiological world. It was completely different from this physical world.
When we abandoned the womb world (died to the womb world) and were born into the physical world, we didn't "go" to any other place. We stayed in the same place. We came into a new and higher dimension of existence, the physical world.
Similarly when we abandon the physical world we continue our existence in a more evolved or higher dimension that is not physical but spiritual.
So the next world is not a "place" where we will be going to. It is here. But in another dimension unknown to us, just as the physical world was unknown to the fetus.
Death does not exist even in the physical sense because all the atoms of our body continue to exist in some other form
Now the purpose of the physiological world -the womb world- was to develop eyes, ears, lungs, feet, hands and brains that were of no use in that environment. Their necessity became apparent in the following world, this physical world.
The purpose of the physical world in which we live now, is to develop moral virtues and to put them to the service of mankind. The usefulness of the effort of polishing our character and acquiring moral virtues will become apparent in the other dimensions of life which are not material but spiritual because progress continues in all the worlds and is not limited to this physical world

Most Wiccans believe in reincarnation. Our souls come back lifetime after lifetime, to learn new lessons and to grow as individuals. Between lives, our souls reside in the Summerlands. It's neither heaven nor hell, but a place for our souls to rest and reflect on the experiences of completed lives. You may be reunited with loved ones as well. What happens when we learn all we can on this earthly plane? I really couldn't say.

People who are unfamiliar with Wicca tend to see the lack of heaven or hell as meaning we live our lives without responsibility. We may not consider ourselves doomed to suffer for an eternity in a Christian hell, but we certainly believe that there are consequences to our actions. Those who do 'evil' deeds, will find their punishment in another lifetime. Karma follows a soul from life to life. Our fates are not determined by any one single action, but rather by the overall accumulation of actions throughout our lives.

Since many Wiccans are influenced by the pantheons they work with, their views of the afterlife may come from the culture they work with. In other words, if you are Wiccan but work with Norse Deities, you may feel more drawn to the idea of Asgard rather than the Summerlands, even though you are not truly following an Asatru path.
Asatru / Norse

The realm of the Gods is called Asgard, and worthy souls go there after death. There are many great halls in Asgard, for the many Gods and Goddesses. The greatest of these halls is Valhalla, where fallen warriors go after death. Those who did not live a life of glory would go to the underworld Niflheim, ruled over by the Goddess Hel. Niflheim is a dull and cold place, where you would be separated from your kin. Reincarnation does exist, but not all souls are reborn, and it's typically found within a family line, reflecting the importance of family and ancestors.

Kemetic / Egyptian

After death, a soul would have to journey to the Hall of Judgement. There, the heart is weighed on a scale against the feather of Ma'at (truth and justice), by the God Anubis. If you lived a sinful life, the heart would be heavy, that soul could not enter paradise and would be devoured by the monster Ammut. The ancient Egyptians believed that the physical body was needed in the afterlife, which is why such elaborate means were taken to preserve the body.

Hellenismos / Greek

The dead would be buried with coins, to pay the ferryman to cross the river Styx and enter the underworld. Once there, worthy souls would enter the Elysian Fields (paradise). Unworthy souls were sent to Tartarus for punishment. But even then, a soul could earn redemption and rise to paradise. There was also a region of limbo, called Asphodel for the souls neither good enough for the Elysian Fields or bad enough for Tartarus. The judges at the gates of Hades would decide the fate of your soul, or whether you would be reincarnated into another life.

Christians think they will go to Heaven or hell

When the unclean spirit is gone out of man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest and fineth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come he findeth it EMPTY, SWEPT and GARNISHED, Then he goeth and he taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first state. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

The rich man and Lazarus died, but Lazarus found REST in the bosom of Abraham whereas the rich man found no REST

As you can see this is what happens after death, it is your choice to come back to this earth. Are you good enough to not only overcome your sins but the sins of seven others.

Many of you can not understand homosexuality or Schizophrenias or autism. Jesus told you that the body has already been GARNISHED, before the spirit goes in and dwells. In Genesis it tells you that the spirits were made first, then he made them male and female.

Jesus told you that he breathe the breath of life into them and that the Holy Ghost he breathe unto them. But you listen to the traditions of men and make void the doctrines of God.

Every soul has its destiny chartered based on its deeds.

Those who have performed terrible acts may be subject to premature deaths i.e. death from causes which are not natural e.g. accidents, death at a young age from any cause, murder etc.
These souls do not go to to any of the higher and lower worlds. They roam about aimlessly in the astral world awating their destiny to take its course. The suffering and pain experienced by such a soul is said to be terrible.

Souls who die of natural causes go to the higher or lower worlds based on their deeds. They would be there temporarily until they are reborn into this world to further fulfill their remaining karmas. The type of birth they take, their future family, their physical health, appearance, personality, emotions, success, challenges etc are all determined by their past deeds.

There are great souls who have fulfilled their worldly karmas do not get reborn to earth again but they move to higher worlds to furhter clear their karmas.

There are 7 higher wrolds and 7 lower worlds. The soul which has cleared the last trace of karma and quashed the ego becomes one with God, the universal life force. There is no longer death and birth. That is Moksha ( Hindus ) or Nirvana ( Buddhist ).

I truly beleive that the idea of heaven and hell was invented so people would/are guided in living their lives to be good humanbeings or give back to the world.

I think that you should not be focusing on what happens after your death- but what happens in your life. thats what matters!

As I have read from spiritual books, I understand this. The after death experience is not uniform for all. Actually the final thought before death is crucial for deciding the next incarnation. If all along your life you are selfish and amass wealth for yourself and your progeny, your thought will naturally be about the wealth you have hoarded. If you are noble and selfless, your final thought will hover around God. Hence our final thought bear the blueprint for our next life. Secondly during death each of our faculties grow dull and vanish one by one viz., seeing, hearing, talking, thinking etc. Finally breath carries away our mind along with it. Our mind is the seed for the new birth. It contains all the experiences we have to undergo in the next birth according to our actions in the past. This explanation seems logical to me. nagarajan.

Vlasko gave you the correct answer. These other answers you can pretty much discard (including mine if you like).

No one can tell you for sure what happens. If you would like some circumstantial evidence, however, look up life after death accounts. People that have died and come back to life with various stories of heaven and so on. There's a researcher named Dr. Moody who has done a great deal of work on this subject.

Try googling his name, read his books. He provides his research and lets you decide. As for my own experience on the matter, I had a cardiac arrest and my heart stopped. A short time later, it was back. I was clinically dead. You know what I saw? Nothing.

For the entire existence of mankind, he has struggled with the question, What happens after death? There are competing answers to this question.

Those who hold to the world view of atheism believe that, at death, one ceases to exist. There is no afterlife or eternal soul that continues to exist. All there is to look forward to is our inevitable death. Scientists tell us that the universe is expanding, growing farther and farther apart. As it does, its energy is being used up, and eventually the stars will burn out and all matter will collapse into dead stars and black holes. It is in the face of this future that the atheist must seek to find meaning and purpose for his own existence in this vast universe.

Those who hold to the animistic religions believe that after death the human soul travels to the land of the underworld, also called the realm of the shadows. For eternity they wander in darkness, experiencing neither joy nor sorrow. Some of the spirits of the deceased may be called upon to aid or torment those on earth.

However, the Bible gives us a unique, contrasting view of death. Scripture makes it clear in Hebrews 9:27, “[M]an is destined to die once and after that to face judgment. . . .” The Bible makes it clear that once our life here on earth is done, we will stand before God to receive our destiny: either eternal life with Him, or the second death in separation from Him.

Upon death the soul separates from the body. 2 Corinthians 5:8 states, “We are confident, I say and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” Luke 16:19-31 gives proof that one’s being exists in full consciousness in heaven or hell. Our personality, memories, and feelings will continue to exist.

In human history, only Jesus has conquered sin and death through His resurrection. For Christians, death is not something we fear. Instead, at death we arrive home in heaven. To live means we exist in a foreign country. Death has lost its sting and now has become a victory through Jesus our Lord.

In order to more properly grasp this truth, we will examine popular misconceptions of what lies beyond the grave, particularly regarding near death experiences, and take an extended look at the biblical evidence of the reality of judgment and the joy of heaven.
