Police, detectives, state troopers, etc are all taught how to detach themselves from situations. It's most likely a defense mechanism to help them cope with all the bullshit they see (especially in NYC)--murder victims, abused kids, drug-addicted mothers & fathers, 12yr old prostitutes, etc...All that stuff has probably made alot of them harder than what they were before they became police. They act like assholes on the outside to appear authoritative and in control (after all, who wants a p***y-a$$ cop to patrol their neighborhood-Would you feel safe?) It's all an illusion...Most of the police probably wanna break down and cry like a ***** after some days on the job, but how would that look to their fellow officers??? Also, they are trained not to associate themselves with victims or criminals, as to not interfere with their mental status while on the job...
For example, a cop might get called to a domestic violence scene and find out the guy is beating the **** out of his girl/wife. If the cop doesn't immediately put on the asshole attitude when he gets to the scene, and starts to have a little compassion and tries to be the "nice guy", it could put the cop in jeopardy.--The guy could shoot the cop, or the cop could get emotionally wrapped up in the situation (maybe immagining his daughter being in that situation & that would f*ck with his head). So, the cop has to be an "asshole" and detach himself from the situation and only look at things in terms of if a crime has been committed and to make his arrest. Also, the police are looking for a specific kind of person to join the force-Don't they take a personality test before they go to the academy for training? I'm sure they only accept people that fit into whatever criteria they're looking for in a police officer.

As a NY cop, I won't lie to you and say that there aren't asshole NY cops in the system -- hell, I work with a couple of them. But, I would like to point out that there are assholes no matter where you work. There are assholes at McDonald's, at the White House, and down on 6th Ave bumming a smoke. Assholes are everywhere, why should cops be any different.
98% of the police you've encountered? How many police have you encountered? Is it 10? Are 9 of the whole 10 cops you've encountered assholes? Because I'll tell you what - there are a lot more than 10 cops in NY.
Or is it 50? 100? 1000? Question for ya: why the hell do you keep "encountering" so many damn cops? Unless you're part of the profession in some way (including EMTs, DAs, etc), you really shouldn't be encountering that many cops. So either way you look at it, either your sample is way too small to be drawing conclusions or your sample is way too big to make your question credible.... unless you're part of the system - which if that were the case, then you would know why some cops act like assholes.
It's because at the end of the day, I'm going home. I'm going to be in one piece, and I'm going home to my family. Now if I have to be an asshole to do it, so be it.
Another thing - if you think cops are assholes, then you probably give off that feeling when you interact with them. And if I approach someone who gives off an attitude, then I'm going to give it right back. Not because I'm on some kind of Freudian power trip (like some crazy girl on here suggested), but because I need you to understand that I'm in charge. If I let you walk all over me, and you have even the slightest intention of hurting me, then you're going to think that you stand a chance - and I can't afford to take that chance. I need you to realize that it's my show and I'm in control - that's my safest bet to going home.
We are the same as you when we're out of uniform. We just want to walk down the street, doing our thing, without getting hassled. The uniform doesn't make us any less human. As one of my friends once said, "Don't hate us - understand us. And THEN if you want to hate us, go ahead."

Your question is faulty. Look at the facts, police are on the defensive because that is their job. Many people automatically mistake that for being an ahole. People who cannot comprehend the need for police officers generally tend to go "Lolz, they mean and stupid" without looking at why the officers NEED to act defensively when they enter a situation.
And greeneyedblondeswede, you spewed more bull____ than most people on these forums can even hope to. Your so far off it's not even funny. Most people get into law enforcement to mix thrill with their hatred of criminal activity. And most of the people I knew from highschool who became police officers were FAR from the underdogs, they were the INTELLIGENT ones though, so they were not the MOST popular. Generally stupid people consider stupidity "cool".

Let me take a few guesses as to who you are.
You come from a single parent home.
Daddy isn't around much.
You do poorly in school.
You still rely on your mother for financial assistance.
You don't have close friends male or female.
You don't work steadily.
How close am I?
Are the Police really your problem?

Why are criminals such annoying, insulting anal-retentive
gitts, you notice everyone who has ever been involved in
crime has absolutely no respect for what the Police do
everywhere, from what I hear the Police in NYC are really
good in catching the AAR criminals out there, and they are
not Aholes at all, but dedicated to getting rid of the criminals
on the street that mess other peoples such a pain when
they commit crimes..................................................................
Attitude is not a part of the criminals entourage, but it is with
those fantastic men and women out there, they are there to
do a job, not put up with fancy pansy aholes who insult them
because they are in the wrong, have you noticed how people
involved in crime always get everything wrong...........................
Cops aka POLICEMEN AND WOMEN, are people they are nice
but if they catch you committing a crime or sassing them then
they are not, and they have the right to arrest you and throw
your ahole in jail, that rhymes does it not......................................
Respect the Police and they will respect you, no matter where
you are..........................................................................................

I think the ones in NY are more so than elsewhere but yes --- that's a common characteristic among them. Studies have shown a number of officers were "nerds" or "underdogs" in school that were picked on --- this is their way of getting back and also there's a comraderie among them -- they teach the newer officers the ropes --- how it's done -- and brag about their abuse -- it becomes a "puffing" situation with each cop trying to out-do the other with stories of what they've done to subjects or inmates. Another factor is the attitude of the chief of police --- the actions of the officers reflect the attitude and position of their superior.

One problem of the job is day in and day out they deal with people like you who prejudge them. The first time you have someone deal with you, it's probably all "racial profiling", etc. instead of admitting you made a mistake.
So, people like you are why some cops have a bad attitude, you are a racist, anti-police person and prejudge others with reckless abandon. Now you get to reap what you sow.
