Years ago, tonsils were removed primarily to treat recurrent tonsillitis or chronic strep throat. Now, obstructive sleep apnea is the number one reason tonsils are removed in children.
While more tonsillectomies on adults are performed to treat infectious problems, many tonsillectomies are performed on adults for sleep apnea as well, often in conjunction with other procedures to open the area in the back of the throat.

The adenoids are removed primarily because they harbor bacteria that can cause recurring ear/sinus infections, or because they block the airway and contribute to obstructive sleep apnea.

There are a variety of traditional surgical approaches that may be used to remove tonsils and adenoids. A new technique called PITA (Powered Intracapsular Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy) is now being performed that offers most patients reduced postoperative pain and a faster recovery than traditional methods.

Recovery times should be around 2 to 4 weeks depends on conditon

My son who is 4 has had large tonsils since birth..I recently had him to the specialist who has recommended that he have them removed... The feeling of flem caught between your mouth and nose are your adenoids, which get agitated during illness.. They swell and do have an association with your tonsils. If and when you decide to have your tonsils removed they also remove the adenoids, basically a package deal..LOL ... A sure fire sign of having tonsillitis is swollen sacrum in your throat next to your uvula(punching bag), snoring and bad breath.. If your worried see your G.P and express your concerns.. If you've had more than 4 throat/upper respiratory infections in a year then it's recommended that you have your tonsils removed..
Hopefully this helps you
Good Luck

only a dr can advise you on whether or not to have your tonsils removed and it's not so common a procedure anymore

back in the day, dr's would take them out frequently b/c they thought it was the tonsils causing infection in children. as time went on, they learned that the risk of infection was worse if having them removed due to complications of surgery being done.

usually tonsilitis involves painful swelling of the tonsils and frequent illness such as strep throat due to bacteria getting caught behind the tonsils and growing into a serious infection

if you aren't getting seriously infected often and are not having painful, swollen, tonsils then you probably won't need to have them removed

the surgery itself is fairly simple but recovery time can be painful and long. my sister had hers removed about a year ago and was gravely ill for 2 days. she wasn't able to eat anything and when she finally felt well enough to eat-it was clear liquids and ice cream. she lost 20 pounds as a result.

most important advise i can give you is check with your dr on what is best for you.

i was lucky and had my tonsils out when i was about 6. but the only way they will take them out for you nowadays is if you have tonsillitis, which symptoms such as throwing up as soon as you eat anything you immediately throw up. and severe redness and swelling of you throat.
what you are describing sounds more like tracea inflammation, see a doctor and see what they can do for you they will probably recommend an operation which will be costly, i suggest you try breathing exercises (when you are well as well) to help stretch the muscles in you throat and nose. then they will not only open up but become less prone to feel as thought they are blocked. :)

i still have my tonsils too. if you keep having tonsillitis i bet your doctor will opt to take them out. there is as new procedure for taking out tonsils now that is much better than the way it used to be. the doctors use a laser and cut out your tonsils so the pain is reduced and the recuperation time is much easier on you. my daughter had her tonsils out using the laser method and she was fine.
