Either pay them a subsidy or teach them to use the rain-forest to their advantage without cutting it down.

Many plants in the rain-forest have medical uses which could also be harvested for profit. This in turn, could help them feed their families without the cutting down of this precious forest.

What they are doing right now will not only hurt them in the short run (you can only use this land to plant a few times as this is not like regular soil) but the whole planet in the long run as we need this rain-forest to do something we all like: to breathe.

They have figured this out in Costa Rica, why not the Amazon? Go figure.

change the meat is the solution ,farm deer
no cholesterol .no fat .everybody likes eating anti lope or deer ,
and cattle destroy whole regions ,Forrest's are removed and pasture is put in its place ,with over grazing ,and the wide feet of the cattle which compress the ground causing the salt content to rise ,desertification is the inevitable result

with deer or anti lopes the forests can remain intact ,the animals eat leaves ,and their pointed hooves punch upside down pyramid shaped holes in the ground which are micro climates for a seed to develop and grow.
so changing from cattle top deer is the answer

as well as Aggro forestall
which means farming under and with the trees ,like coffee and a variety of maize as well as beans and other vegetables ,that grow on vines (there are many ) and mixing the Forrest with fruit trees

If they're using the rain forest why look for alternates? If they're cutting & burning to plant grass or crops, learn to run the cattle in the forest.
