You can claim her as an exemption, not as a dependent and only if your filing as married filing a joint return. She will have to sign the return form as well. Dependents are children and elderly parents or any other person living in your home that you are legally and financially responsible for. A spouse can't be listed as both a spouse expemption and as a dependent.

Not as a dependent, but you can file a joint return and take an exemption for each of you. If you file as married filing separately, you can only claim an exemption for her if she had NO income for the year.

No, you do not claim your spouse as your dependent. When you are married, you have two choices in filing status. Married Filing Jointly and Married Filing Separately. You will normally pay the least tax by filing a joint return.

When you file jointly, you take one exemption for each of you, for a total of two exemptions.

When you file separately, you take your own personal exemption only on your return. She files her own return and claims her own personal exemption. No one is claimed as a dependent.
